Liquid electrolytes for a lithium metal battery comprise an aprotic solvent, an ionic liquid, a lithium salt, 8 mol % to 30 mol % hydrofluoroether and up to 5 mol % additives. A molar ratio of the hydrofluoroether to the lithium salt is 0.22:1 to 0.83:1. The liquid electrolytes achieve at least a 50% improvement in cycle life over conventional electrolytes, extend capacity retention and delay increases in internal resistance.

A solid-state cathode for a solid-state electrochemical cell includes an electrochemically active cathode material and one or more elemental dopant residing in grain boundaries of the electrochemically active cathode material. The grain boundaries contain at least 0.2 wt % of the one or more elemental dopant and the one or more elemental dopant is less than 10 wt % of the solid-state cathode. The solid-state cathode does not have liquid, gel and polymer materials.

The polymer electrolyte lamination layer is formulated using a crosslinked polymer, a lithium salt, a plasticizer, and an anode additive. The anode cap and the polymer electrolyte lamination layer work together to produce densely plated lithium metal between the lithium metal seed and the anode cap with little or no external pressure.

Lithium-metal batteries with improved dimensional stability are presented along with methods of manufacture. The lithium-metal batteries incorporate an anode cell that reduces dimensional changes during charging and discharging. The anode cell includes a container having a first portion and a second portion to form an enclosed cavity. The first portion is electrically-conductive and chemically-stable to lithium metal. The second portion is permeable to lithium ions and chemically-stable to lithium metal. The anode cell also includes an anode comprising lithium metal and disposed within the cavity. The anode is in contact with the first portion and the second portion. The cavity is configured such that volumetric expansion and contraction of the anode during charging and discharging is accommodated entirely therein.

A cathode for a solid-state battery comprises a composite cathode active material formed of a layered lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) in a solid solution matrix of lithium oxide (LiO) and a cobalt oxide phase. For example, the composite cathode active material can be layered LCO in a solid solution matrix of one of LiO&#x2014;LiCoO&#x2014;CoO, LiO&#x2014;LiCoO and LiO&#x2014;CoO, with 0&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.5. The LCO is at least 80 wt. % of the composite cathode active material. The cathode is a sintered solid-state cathode wafer that is free-standing, upon which solid-state battery cells are fabricated.
