A filter comprising a polymer material comprising a polymer matrix such as polyacrylonitrile containing dispersed metal oxide particles. The metal oxide particles are for example ferric oxide particles, and the polymer material contains generally 0.25-3% by weight of these particles. The filters are resistant to thermo-oxidation and have reduced shrinkage or degradation.

Modified rayon is produced by adding a modifier to a cellulose solution and spinning fibers from the solution, or by adding a modifier to an alkali cellulose solution or material, xanthating and spinning fibers by the viscose spinning process, wherein the modifier is an amine of the formula (1a), (1b), (1c), (1d) or (1e) ##STR1## The modified rayon produced in this way can be dyed with reactive dyes without addition of electrolyte salt or alkali and have significantly more affinity than conventional viscose fibers.

A process for the production of shaped structures of cellulose, in particular fibers of cellulose, by shaping and subsequent regeneration of water-soluble cellulose derivatives is described. The process employs water-soluble alcohols, water-soluble ketones or, in particular, water or mixtures thereof as solvents for the shaping and carrying out the shaping by a dry shaping process.

Recycling materials comprising cellulosic and synthetic fibers Described is a process for recycling materials comprising fiber mixtures comprising cellulose fibers, comprising the steps of: i) providing fiber mixtures comprising cellulosic fibers and fibers composed of synthetic polymers, and ii) subjecting these mixtures to a microbial hydrolysis in which the cellulosic fibers are completely degraded. The process makes it possible in particular to separate fiber mixtures. For this, the microorganisms and the hydrolyzate are removed in a conventional manner following step ii), and the remaining synthetic polymers are carried off in a conventional manner to be further recycled.

Recycling materials comprising cellulosic and synthetic fibers

A method monitors and measures the uniformity of tows with mechanical sensing elements in the course of production on a tow line. The tension of the running tow is measured upstream of a transport roll arrangement and is utilized as a measure of the uniformity of the tow. Irregularities in the tow result in tow tension determination outside a predetermined tension range, and when the determined tension measurement is outside that range the irregular tow portions are remove. Also, the frequency of tow tension determination outside a predetermined range may be used as an indication of tow quality and for removing substandard tows.

Monitoring the uniformity of tows

A process and apparatus for guiding a continuous moving tow in synthetic fiber manufacture. The profile (the thickness distribution and width) and the position of the tow are continuously sensed in a non-contact manner and an appropriate electrical signal is generated. This electrical signal is used to control the profile and the position of the tow in such a way that its profile and position stay within predetermined target value ranges. The tow geometry is preferably sensed using a CCD camera, while the tow geometry is controlled using tow-engaging deflecting means. In this way it is possible to optimize tow profile and position, for example for entry into a stuffer box (FIG. 1).

Process and apparatus for guiding a tow

The invention relates to filaments and fibers of acrylonitrile polymers, which contain 10 to 30% by weight of carboxyl groups, their use and processes for their production. The filaments and fibers exhibit, in the dry state, tensile strengths of more than 10 cN/tex and knot strengths of more than 6 cN/tex and can be processed on customary machinery and are suitable for the production of shaped structures of high water retention. The polymeric raw materials required for the spinning are produced by hydrolysis of acrylonitrile polymers using aqueous dilute acids in a heterogeneous phase system.

A fiber or filament of a swellable polymer of high tensile strength is made by spinning a polymeric raw material which is produced by agitating a suspension of solid particles of an acrylonitrile polymer in dilute sulfuric acid having an acid concentration between 40 to 50 percent by weight until the polymer is hydrolyzed to an extent that it contains from 10 to 30 percent by weight of carboxyl groups such that sticking of individual particles of the polymer to one another is avoided.

Monofils and bristles which comprise at least 90% by weight of acrylonitrile units and have a linear density of more than 2.5 tex possess a relative solution viscosity of 1.7 to 6.0, a tear strength of at least 20 cN/tex and an initial modulus of more than 700 cN/tex. The manufacturing process is distinguished by a wet stretch of the spun filaments by at least 1:4, drying under tension and a subsequent hot stretch of at least 1:2, the overall stretch being at least 1:8, preferably 1:10 to 1:20. The monofils and bristles according to the invention are suitable in particular for producing filament-reinforced composite materials.
