A method of structuring a glass element having a first side face and a second side face is provided. The method includes the steps of: producing a filament-shaped flaw in the glass element with a pulsed laser beam along a focus line; etching to remove glass in the filament-shaped flaw to form a wall extending from the first side face towards the second side face, the wall having a boundary line that is tapered at a vertex between the wall and the first side face with a taper angle with respect to a perpendicular of the first side face; and adjusting the taper angle by controlling a feature of the focus line. The feature is selected from a group consisting of a position of the focus line, a length of the focus line, an intensity distribution of the focus line, and any combinations thereof.

Method of structuring a glass element and structured glass element produced thereby

The present disclosure relates to compositions that can be used for optical fibers and other systems that transmit light in the near-, mid- and/or far-ranges of the infrared spectrum, such as for example in the wavelength range of 1.5 &#x3bc;m to 14 &#x3bc;m. The optical fibers may comprise a light-transmitting chalcogenide core composition and a cladding composition. In some embodiments, the light-transmitting chalcogenide core composition has a refractive index n(core) and a coefficient of thermal expansion CTE(core), and the cladding composition has a refractive index n(cladding) and a coefficient of thermal expansion CTE(cladding), wherein n(cladding) is less than n(core) and in some embodiments wherein CTE(cladding) is less than CTE(core). In some embodiments, the chalcogenide glass core composition comprises a) sulfur and/or selenium, b) germanium, and c) gallium, indium, tin and/or one or more metal halides.

Chalcogenide compositions for optical fibers and other systems

A strongly scattering optoceramic converter material having a density of less than 97% is provided, as well as a method for producing such an optoceramic material. By appropriately choosing in particular the composition, blending method, and sintering conditions, the production method permits to produce converter materials with tailored properties.

Strongly scattering ceramic converter and method for producing same

A flexible light guide that has a homogeneous light emission with high luminance is provided. The flexible light guide is provided by a side-emitting light guide. The side-emitting light guide includes a light-guiding fiber designed as a side-emitting fiber so that light guided in the fiber is scattered out along a longitudinal direction in a distributed manner. The guide also includes a tube that surrounds the fiber. The tube is designed to be light-scattering and translucent so that light emitted from the fiber can traverse the tube with scattering. The tube is surrounded by a cladding. The tube and cladding are made of plastic.

Side-emitting light guide and method for the production thereof

A light source with a linear appearance is provided. The light source has a flexible light guide that has a homogeneous light emission with high luminance and a emitting light guide. The light emitting guide has a core, in which at least one soul extends, and a transparent cladding that surrounds the core. The core and the cladding are formed from transparent plastic. The core has a higher index of refraction than the cladding. The soul is light-deflecting, light-reflecting, or light-scattering so as to scatter light guided in the light guide and to emit the light through the cladding toward the outside. The soul has a scattering length that is at most twice as large as a maximum cross-sectional dimension of the soul.

A converter arrangement for light sources with high luminance is provided that includes an axially pivotable carrying wheel and a converter fixed on one side of the carrying wheel. The converter includes fluorescent materials that convert impinging light into light having a different wave length and emits the light having the different wavelength. The ratio of the total area of the converter arrangement to the area enclosed by the outer boundary curve of the converter is at least 3, preferably at least 3.5, particularly preferably at least 4.5.

The present disclosure relates to a bonding glass which has improved water resistance and has a coefficient of thermal expansion &#x3b1;(25-300) of from 14&#xb7;10Kto 17&#xb7;10K, comprising, in mol % on an oxide basis, 5-7 of BO, 10-14 of AlO, 36-43 of PO, 15-22 of NaO, 12.5-20 of KO, 2-6 of BiOand &#x3e;0-6 of R oxide, where R oxide is an oxide selected from the group consisting of MnOand SiOand SnOand TaOand NbOand FeOand GeOand CaO. The bonding glass is free of PbO except for, at most, impurities. The bonding glass may have a glass transition temperature Tg of from 390&#xb0; C. to 430&#xb0; C. The present disclosure also relates to uses of this bonding glass.

High-expansion bonding glass having improved water resistance and uses thereof

The invention relates to a method for producing glass tubes with a cross section of a noncircular form by reshaping. This method includes at least providing a glass tube, heating the glass tube, providing at least one reshaping tool, which has a forming body with a forming area for reshaping the heated glass tube, the forming body including at least one open-porous material, setting a gas pressure in the interior of the reshaping tool lower than 90 kPa, so that a negative pressure is produced on the forming area, and reshaping the heated glass tube by applying a compressive force perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the glass tube, the compressive force being generated by the reshaping tool and being applied to the outer surface of the glass tube, and the outer surface of the glass tube being fixed by the negative pressure.

Method for producing a glass tube with a cross section of a noncircular form by reshaping

A product is provided that includes a volume-colored monolithic glass or glass ceramic element and to a method for producing same. The glass or glass ceramic element has a first region in which the coloration is modified so that light transmission of the first region differs from light transmission of a second, adjacent region. The light scattering in the region of modified coloration in the glass or glass ceramic remains the same as light scattering in the second, adjacent region with non-modified light transmission.

Method for modifying the transmission of glasses and glass ceramics and glass or glass ceramic articles that can be produced according to the method

A volume-colored monolithic glass ceramic cooking plate is provided. The plate includes a first zone in which the coloration of the glass ceramic differs from that of a second, adjacent zone, so that an absorption coefficient of the first zone is lower than the absorption coefficient of the second, adjacent zone and so that integral light transmission in the visible spectral range is greater in the first zone than the integral light transmission of the second, adjacent zone. The light scattering in the glass ceramic of the first zone differs from light scattering in the glass ceramic of the second zone by not more than 20 percentage points, preferably by not more than 5 percentage points.

A container for storing and/or applying a substance is provided. The container includes a glass body having a substantially hollow cylindrical shape and enclosing a cavity, as well as a distal end with a first opening and a proximal end with a second opening. One or more connecting elements are attached to the glass body at the distal end and are made of a plastic material. The plastic material is a thermoplastic or thermosetting plastic material and the glass body and the or each connecting element are connected to each other by use of a joint. A method for producing, without a mold, a shaped glass article having a predefined geometry is provided. The method includes providing a starting glass, supporting the starting glass, heating a portion of the starting glass so that in the portion a predetermined spatial viscosity distribution of the starting glass is obtained from 10to 10dPa&#xb7;s and so that at points where the starting glass is supported a predetermined spatial viscosity distribution of the starting glass does not fall below 10dPa&#xb7;s, and deforming the heated starting glass by action of an external force until the predefined geometry of the glass article is obtained.

A syringe body/needle assembly is provided that is free of an organic adhesive bond. The assembly includes a syringe body having a nozzle that has an opening; a needle fixed in the syringe body or in the nozzle; and a connecting body made of doped glass. The opening through which the needle is introduced into an interior of the syringe body is hermetically sealed to the needle.
