The present invention relates to a sunscreen formulation comprising at least one of the UV filters (A) selected from (a) triazine derivatives; (b) cinnamic acid derivatives; (c) bis-resorcinyl triazines; (f) benzimidazole derivatives; (i) 4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor; (h) benzoyl piperazine derivatives; (j) benzoxazole derivatives; (k) diarylbutadiene derivatives; (I) phenyl benzotriazole derivatives; (n) benzylidene malonates; (o) TEA-Salicylate; (r) imidazoline derivatives; (u) inorganic UV filters selected from metal oxides; (v) naphthalates; and (w) merocyanine derivatives; and optionally comprising at least one of the UV filters (B) selected from (d) aminobenzophenone derivatives; (e) dibenzoylmethane derivatives; (g) &#x3b2;,&#x3b2;-Diphenylacrylate derivatives; (i) camphor derivatives different from; (o) salicylate derivatives different from; (p) anthranilate derivatives; and (s) benzalmalonate derivatives; wherein the ratio R of the effective irradiance for previtamin Dformation Eto the effective irradiance for erythema formation Eon the skin is at least 1.8, for increasing the transmittance of UV radiation on human skin for the production of cholecalciferol (previtamin D) and simultaneously for the use in a method for protecting the human skin against UV radiation when exposed to the sun, which method comprises applying said sunscreen formulation to the skin.

The instant invention refers to the use of a concentrated aqueous polymer dispersion with an average particle size of less than 1000 nm comprising (a) a polymer carrier prepared by heterophase radical polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of (b) an oil-soluble organic UV absorber selected from the class of p-aminobenzoic acid derivatives; salicylic acid derivatives; benzophenone derivatives; diphenyl acrylate derivatives; benzofuran derivatives; polymeric UV absorbers, comprising one or more organosilicon radicals; cinnamic acid derivatives; camphor derivatives; s-triazine derivatives; trianilino-s-triazine derivatives; menthyl anthranilates; and benzotriazole derivatives; wherein the weight ratio of the oil-soluble organic UV absorber (b) to polymer carrier (a) is greater than 50 parts UV absorber per 100 parts of carrier; for the protection of human and animal hair and skin against the damaging effect of UV radiation. The present invention relates to derivatives of the 1H-pyrano[4,3-b]benzofuran-1-one structure and their nitrogen analogues which possess powerful antioxidant properties combined with a highly effective UV absorbing functionality in one molecule.
