An electrochemical method for C&#x2014;C coupling a phenol and an aniline in a reaction vessel containing a suitable solvent or solvent mixture and a conductive salt to produce biaryls having both hydroxyl and amino functions, wherein the difference in the oxidation potentials &#x394;E of the substrates ranges from 10 mV to 450 mV and the substrate with the highest oxidation potential is in excess, which method dispenses with multi-step syntheses using metallic reagents.

Electrochemical process for coupling of phenol to aniline

An electrochemical method for coupling anilines. When coupling two different anilines, the difference of the oxidation potential of the substrates is in the region of between 10 mV to 450 mV, and the aniline with the highest oxidation potential is added in excess. The method allows biaryldiamines to be electrochemically produced, and can avoid the need for multi-step syntheses using metallic reagents.
