The invention provides a communications device which uses a clock circuit for generating a clock signal, the clock circuit comprising a tuneable oscillator. The clock frequency is varied to make sure it remains within a tolerance range, so that the device can continue to receive messages correctly. An error rate of received messages is determined, and in response to the error rate exceeding a threshold, a setting of the resistor arrangement and/or the capacitor arrangement is changed to change the clock signal frequency thereby to lower the error rate.

Embodiments of a device and method are disclosed. In an embodiment, a CAN device is disclosed. The CAN device includes a transmit data (TXD) input interface, a TXD output interface, a receive data (RXD) input interface, an RXD output interface and a traffic control system connected between the TXD input and output interfaces and between the RXD input and output interfaces. The traffic control system is configured to detect the presence of classic CAN traffic on the RXD input interface and if the presence of classic CAN traffic is detected on the RXD input interface, emulate an error management protocol of a classic CAN controller in response to signals received on the TXD input interface.

Controller area network (CAN) device and method for emulating classic CAN error management

Examples herein are directed to communicating on a communication bus in accordance with a message-based signal protocol. One or more messages are generated with a data field, in which a portion of the data field is reserved for a signature. The signature has a bit length corresponding to a bit length of the reserved portion of the data field. The signature is coded in the portion of the data field reserved for the signature, and at least one message is transmitted with the signature coded therein. Each message received on the communication bus and having a signature coded in a data field therein is authenticated based on the signature, and processed by removing the signature from the data field and decoding the message with the signature removed.

Embodiments of a device and method are disclosed. In an embodiment, a CAN device is disclosed. The CAN device includes a TXD input interface, a TXD output interface, an RXD input interface, an RXD output interface, and a traffic control system connected between the TXD input and output interfaces and between the RXD input and output interfaces. The traffic control system is configured to detect the presence of CAN Flexible Data-rate (FD) traffic on the RXD input interface and if the traffic control system detects the presence of CAN FD traffic on the RXD input interface, disconnect the RXD input interface from the RXD output interface and disconnect the TXD input interface from the TXD output interface.

Various embodiments relate to a network receiver using distributed clock synchronization. The network receiver may include a first timing engine that samples bits received by the receiver with a first clock having a first clock frequency (f) with a first clock frequency tolerance (&#x394;f), and a second timing engine that samples bits received by the receiver with a second clock having a second clock frequency (f) with a second clock frequency tolerance (&#x394;f). The second clock frequency is less than the first clock frequency. The third clock frequency may be greater than the first clock frequency. Multi-rate sampling for network receiving nodes using distributed clock synchronization

A star network () having a star coupler () and at least a first and second network branch (), wherein each network branch () comprises at least one network node () and a bus driver () connected between the star coupler () and the at least one network node (). A first bus driver () of the first network branch () is adapted to detect a symbol pattern comprising at least two predetermined equal control symbols, which are transmitted from the first network node () to the second network node (), wherein a control symbol is part of a control pattern. The control pattern is used to force at least the second network node () to switch into a predetermined state. The first bus driver () is disabling the first network branch () from the star network () based on whether the transmitted symbol pattern is detected. By using the protection mechanism a reliable detection of babbling idiots is provided. Moreover, in case of detecting such babbling idiots the remaining network nodes are separated and the network can operate without being influenced by the faulty network node.

Described is a method of monitoring the communication in a group of data processing units, wherein a data processing unit transmits data signals to other data processing units for carrying out certain operations. The remarkable thing about the invention is that, upon reception of a data signal from the transmitting data processing unit, every other data processing unit answers both the transmitting data processing unit and the other data processing units by way of an appropriate acknowledgement.

The invention refers to a method for monitoring a communication media access schedule of a communication controller () of a communication system () by means of a bus guardian (). The communication system () comprises a communication media () and nodes () connected to the communication media (). Each node () comprises a communication controller () and a bus guardian () assigned to the communication controller (). Messages are transmitted among the nodes () across the communication media () based on a cyclic time triggered communication media access scheme. In order to provide a mechanism which allows the bus guardian () to monitor the communication media access scheme of the communication controller () even during startup of the communication it is suggested, that the bus guardian () has a priori knowledge about possible deviations from the communication media access schedule during startup of the communication and that the bus guardian () during startup makes use of the a priori knowledge to distinguish between an allowed deviation and a forbidden deviation caused by a failure of the communication controller ().

The invention relates in general to a method for determining cable termination resistances in communication networks and a corresponding communication network, and is applicable especially to high-speed communication networks in automobiles, which uses dual-wire harnesses like FlexRay e.g. For this purpose a method for determining cable termination resistances in communication networks is proposed, where a termination resistance is assigned to at least a part of the cable ends of the network in accordance with the following steps determining for each cable end the cable length to any other cable end, assigning a weight value to each length where lengths with greater values are combined with higher weights than lengths with smaller values, for all cable ends: summing up the weights assigned to all lengths starting from a specific cable end and assigning this sum to the respective cable end as the weight of this cable end, determining the termination resistance of a specific cable end by multiplying the cable impedance Z with a constant of proportionality and the sum of the weights of all cable ends divided by the weight of the specific cable end.

A method and a bit stream decoding unit for bit stream decoding has a bit stream comprising a number of consecutive samples. In order to provide for rapid and, in particular, reliable decoding of the bit stream, a detection window comprising a number of samples is defined and the detection window is positioned at certain positions on the bit stream in order to comprise certain samples with respective sample values. A majority voting is applied to the sample values in the detection window and, in dependence on the result of the majority voting, the bit stream is decoded and respective bit values are generated.
