The invention relates to a control chamber, the pressure of which determines the strokes or positions of a nozzle needle, and which is assigned to a force or pressure sensor in order to detect the progression of the control chamber pressure. Because the control chamber pressure significantly changes during the closing of the nozzle needle, the operating phases of the injector can be exactly determined from the sensor data and supplied to an engine controller.

Fuel injector

A method for operating a fuel injection system of an internal combustion engine is described. The fuel injection system has an injector for metering fuel into a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. The injector has an actuator, a control valve and a nozzle needle. In the method, the actuator is supplied a voltage and/or a current during an activation period. The control valve is set into a lifting motion by the actuator. The injector is opened and closed by the nozzle needle, using the lifting motion of the control valve. A further time period is ascertained. The further time period ends at the closing time of the nozzle needle. A function is ascertained, which links the activation period to the further time period. A shortest activation period, for which the nozzle needle opens and produces an injection, is ascertained with the aid of the function. An opening delay period (d) of the nozzle needle is ascertained as a function of the shortest time period.

Method for operating a fuel injection system of an internal combustion engine

The invention relates to a fuel injector for injecting fuel into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, comprising a nozzle needle () which is able to perform stroke motions and by the stroke motion of which at least one injection opening can be exposed or closed, and further comprising a control valve () for controlling the stroke motion of the nozzle needle () in that, depending on the respective switch position of the control valve (), hydraulic pressure applied in closing direction to the nozzle needle () in a control chamber () is altered, and further comprising a sensor array () for detecting the needle closing time. According to the invention, the sensor array () is arranged in the low-pressure area of the fuel injector in a space () which is sealed with respect to the fuel-conducting area ().
