A novel method for preparing an aryl-substituted fatty acid or fatty ester is disclosed. According to the method, an olefinic composition selected from among mono-unsaturated fatty acids, mono-unsaturated fatty esters and mixtures thereof is introduced to a reaction zone comprising a liquid aromatic hydrocarbon and a catalytic amount of a clay catalyst to produce a reaction that is allowed to proceed for a time and at a temperature sufficient to produce a reaction product comprising a desired yield of aryl-substituted fatty acid or fatty ester. Preferably, the introduction of the olefinic composition is conducted slowly, such as over a period of one to four, more preferably, two to four, hours. Related methods and compositions, including xylylstearic acid, are also disclosed.

A method for preparation of aryl-substituted aliphatic hydrocarbons is disclosed. The method comprises reacting in the presence of a solid superacid resin catalyst an unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon in liquid form with an aromatic hydrocarbon that is susceptible to Friedel-Crafts reaction. The reaction between the liquid unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon and the aromatic hydrocarbon produces a reaction product comprising an aryl-substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon.

A process of converting 2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrimidines (.DELTA.-1) having at least one hydrogen in the 2-position to 3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidines (.DELTA.-2), which comprises hydrogenating and dehydrogenating said .DELTA.-1 tetrahydropyrimidines. Such hydrogenating and dehydrogenating may be done in either two sequential steps or in one step. Said .DELTA.-1 tetrahydropyrimidines can also be converted to .DELTA.-2 tetrahydropyrimidines by heating in the essential absence of a solvent, and preferably under basic conditions. In addition, corresponding hexahydropyrimidines can be converted to corresponding .DELTA.-2 tetrahydropyrimidines by dehydrogenation. This invention also relates to the use of .DELTA.-2 tetrahydropyrimidines, particularly as corrosion inhibitors.

This invention relates to the oxidation of sterically hindered 1,2-dithiole-3-thiones with nitric acid to form the corresponding 1,2-dithiolium compounds. For example, when 4-neopentyl-5-tert-butyl-1,2-dithiole-3-thione is oxidized with nitric acid, 4-neopentyl 5-tert-butyl 1,2-dithiolium hydrogen sulfate is formed. When non-sterically hindered 1,2-dithiole-3-thiones are oxidized with nitric acid, decomposition rather than dithiolium formation occurs.
