A material which has two reactive groups, one of which is reactive with the irst of two dissimilar polymeric materials but not the second and the other of which is reactive with the second but not the first, is utilized to bind layers of the two polymeric materials together. The groups that are reactive with the first polymeric material are reacted with it as a layer of that material cures. Then a layer of the uncured second polymeric material is placed on the first and the groups that are reactive with it are reacted with it as it cures.

Process for bonding polymers

An elastomeric or rigid polymeric material, such as a propellant, is strongly bonded to an incompatible material, such as a silicon rubber liner, when a long chain polymer which is insoluble in and unreactive with the liner but has groups reactive with the propellant is added to the liquid or uncured liner. As the liner cures, the polymer chain migrates to the surface. Upon laying the propellant on the surface and curing the propellant, the propellant is cross-linked to the long chain polymer, which is entangled in the rubber liner.

Mechanical-chemical linkage between polymer layers

A barrier layer made up of a suitable powder interspersed within either a trix of cured propellant binder or a matrix of silicone rubber is interposed between a silicone rubber insulator and a solid propellant grain in a rocket motor to prevent curatives from migrating from the propellant into the silicone rubber layer when the propellant is cast.

Powder barrier bonding technique

Compositions consisting essentially of about 1 weight percent carbon black, rom about 20 to about 35 weight percent polytetrafluoroethylene and from about 79 to about 64 weight percent of a material selected from the group consisting of isobutylene-isoprene copolymer and ethylene-propylene rubber are disclosed as being useful as protective fillers in situations where the protective filler is subjected to high temperatures and pressures.

Product and process for protecting split line of a movable nozzle

A rocket motor is described in which a thin layer of metallic foil or the ke is used between a silicone rubber insulator and an isocyanate cured, hydroxy terminated polybutadiene bound propellant grain to prevent migration of isocyanate into the silicone rubber liner.

Metal interlayer adhesive technique

An inhibitor for double-base propellant consisting essentially of a layer Saran or polystyrene bonded to the propellant grain by means of a block copolymer containing vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride blocks or polystyrene blocks and polyurethane blocks.
