This microphone includes a microphone element, speaker and antenna all internal to the microphone housing. These components are carried by a chassis that is fastened to the microphone body at its lower end which also provides the effective attachment point for the microphone cable. The speaker is mounted in the chassis at an angle having its face slight upwardly incline to project sound towards the top of the microphone. An antenna element includes walls on either side of the speaker for reflecting sound upwardly. The antenna element has apertures in its top portion to allow for the passage of sound therethrough. The microphone element is also in a position for picking up sound through the top of the microphone.

A backlighted liquid crystal display (LCD) assembly has a thin phosphorescent layer positioned between the display and the light source to provide an even distribution of light intensity across the viewing surface of the display. The phosphorescent layer includes a phosphor powder mixed into a resin. The mixture is molded into a thin sheet and then cut to size. The phosphorescent layer and an optional disiccant layer may be encapsulated between sheets of acrylic film. The phosphorescent layer may also include a phosphorescent coating that is applied to the rear surface of the LCD or to the front surface of the light source.

A backlighted display system includes a liquid crystal display, a flat light guide behind the display, and light emitting diodes (LED's). The light guide is a molded slab of clear polycarbonate material with two planes depressed into its rear surface. Four segmented bordering surfaces are approximately arcuate in shape. The depressed planes, the segmented bordering surfaces, and the rear surface are coated with a reflective white paint. LED holders are integrally molded with the light guide. A central portion of the front surface is optionally textured. The display system provides thin construction with even light distribution across the width of the display, low power consumption, and good outdoor visibility at dusk or dawn.

A whip antenna assembly of conductive cable, conductive base section, conductive protection knob and a environmental cover. The conductive antenna cable is constructed of multiple layers of brass plated stainless steel wire wound in a helix about a single wire strand which serves as a central core. The conductive base section and conductive protection knob consist of a zinc alloy and are injection cast onto opposite ends of the conductive antenna cable. An environmental cover made from polyurethane is injection molded over the subassembly of conductive antenna cable, conductive base section and conductive protection knob.

Apparatus having an integral coaxial antenna coupled via a coaxial connector to its internal circuitry has a coaxial switch/connector for alternatively coupling an external coaxial signal source to the internal circuitry, thus reducing impedance mismatch to a minimum with no impedance matching network required.

A completely flexible dipole antenna is formed from coaxial cable having a braided wire core with skirt also formed of shielding over a flexible sleeve. A coil spring which is not electrically active supports the antenna above the connector. A console for charging a portable communications device and converting it for mobile operation can accommodate portable units of varying lengths. The contacts for the charging current are positioned by the insertion of a portable unit by means of a unique reel mechanism. Interconnection and latching are also activated by the insertion of the portable unit. The converter connector serves as a part of the latching and locking apparatus which makes the unattended portable essentially theft proof.

An improved subminiature electrical connector arrangement especially suited for miniature electrical or electronic apparatus. The connector arrangement includes a two-piece female connector assembly wherein one part thereof may be suitably interconnected to the circuitry of the apparatus while the same is outside the associated housing. This connector may then be placed in alignment with an opening within the housing and a second connector portion inserts within the opening and makes a snap-fit, weather tight seal therein and engages said first connector portion, all without special tools or any additional hardware. An associated male connector plug makes a convenient interconnection with the female assembly by including a hook-like projection overhanging one edge thereof and which engages a recess in the top of a housing to permit the male plug to rotate downwardly and inwardly into correct mechanical and electrical engagement with the female connector assembly. The male plug further includes a plurality of contact spring elements with sidewardly extending projections which make wiping engagement with associated contact members in the female connector assembly and which exert a sidewise force therein so that, upon release of the associated fastening means securing the plug to the housing in its interconnected position, the sidewise spring bias forces the male plug at least partially out of the female assembly for an automatic disengagement and eject facility.
