The present invention relates to the use of a combination of a free fluorescent whitening agent and cationic polymer as a brightening agent for a synthetic single or blended textile, especially polyester textile, and to a corresponding brightening agent as well as a laundering process for brightening a synthetic, single or blended textile, which is characterized by a) preparing a composition by contacting a free fluorescent whitening agent with a cationic polymer, and b) treating said synthetic, single or blended textile with the composition prepared in step a).

A detergent composition comprising i) 1-70% of an anionic or nonionic surfactant, ii) 1-75% of a builder, iii) 0.001-5% of at least one compound of Formula (1) wherein R represents a C-Calkyl residue and M represents hydrogen or an alkali metal cation, optionally with further FWA's, iv) 0-30% of a peroxide, v) 0-10% of a peroxide activator, vi) 0-5% of a bleaching catalyst and vii) 0-5% of an enzyme, each component by weight, based on the total weight of the detergent composition, use thereof for domestic washing of textile fibre materials and a process for the fluorescent whitening of textile materials.

The present invention provides a detergent composition D comprising at least one compound of formula (1) together with at least one compound of formula (2) wherein all substituents have the meanings as defined in the claims; as well as a process using such detergent composition and mixtures comprising fluorescent whitening agents.

Detergent compositions

There is provided a white crystal form of the compound having the formula: ##STR1## whose crystal form is characterised by an X-ray diffraction diagram which is essentially as shown in Table I, II or III. Also provided is a formulation comprising from 10 to 85% by weight of the white crystal form of compound having the formula (1) and from 90 to 15% by weight of a polyhydroxy compound, preferably glycerine.
