An improved sail restraint for Migler's vertical axis wind turbine in which excessive wind speed automatically causes the sails to be feathered, protecting them from wind damage, and, when the wind speed is reduced to an allowable level, the improved sail restraint automatically allows the sails to be reset to their nonfeathered, working position.

A device for generating electricity in which wind blowing from any direction causes the rotation of sails around a vertical tower. As the sails rotate the sails moving toward the wind are automatically feathered, and the sails moving away from the direction of the wind are prevented from being feathered by sail restraints. An inner sail restraint positions each sail so that the sail gybes at an earlier time than would otherwise occur. An outer sail restraint 'catches' the sail as it gybes, capturing much of the energy of the gybe, adding additional rotational force. The device may be used to extract energy from the wind to produce electricity.

A pole-housing device for nonhuman primates, especially monkeys, comprising a cage having poles and walls mounted in the perimeter of the device, and having an 'H'-shaped squeeze-back means and a means for rapid removal of a nonhuman primate, wherein a nonhuman primate may be removed from the device by connecting the tether that is worn by the nonhuman primate to a tether-holder, disconnecting the tether from the sliding ring on the pole and opening an exit door adjacent to the pole, to remove the nonhuman primate, and wherein a nonhuman primate may be squeezed against the front or rear wall of the device and held there by pulling the squeeze-back, which is positioned between poles on opposite walls, against the front or rear wall.

A device for the long-term securing or 'housing' of large or aggressive monkeys on poles within an enclosure is disclosed wherein a tether with rotatable joints is connected at one end to a collar around a monkey's neck and at the other end to a ring loosely fitted around a vertical climbing pole attached to horizontal support means, with perch means, and with a source of food and water being applied to each monkey, and with removable side walls, and with doors, permitting access to each individual monkey, and with all escape routes from the device closed by a ceiling and a floor, wherein each monkey may climp up and down its climbing pole freely with the ring sliding up and down the pole, and wherein the monkeys may make close physical contact with the other monkey similarly restrained within the device without their tethers becoming entangled, and wherein a plurality of such devices may be placed with their side walls alongside each other and connected by conventional means and their side walls removed, wherein the monkeys in the adjacent devices may now make close physical contact with each other, and wherein a caretaker attempting to catch a monkey may be protected from attack by adjacent monkeys by the reinsertion of the side walls, or partitions, and wherein a monkey that is being attacked by adjacent monkeys may have a safe area to which to retreat by the insertion of partitions between it and the adjacent aggressive monkeys.

A device for the long-term securing or 'housing' of monkeys on poles is disclosed wherein a tether with rotatable joints is connected at one end to a collar around the monkey's neck and at the other end to a ring loosely fitted around a vertical climbing pole attached to a horizontal support means with perch means, and a source of food and water being supplied to each climbing pole, wherein the monkeys may climb up and down the climbing poles freely with the ring sliding up and down the pole, and wherein the monkey may make close social contact with other monkeys similarly restrained without their tethers becoming entangled.

Pole-'housing' for monkeys

A system comprised of a personal computer controlling a tape recorder and connected to a telephone line providing the capability to deliver programmed instruction over the telephone. The caller listens to instructions and then questions from the tape. He speaks his response after the tape has stopped and then hears the correct answer played from the tape. If the caller's response was correct, he dials a 1 on his telephone and dials a 0 if his answer was incorrect. The next question and answer are then played. If his previous answer was incorrect, then after the next question and answer sequence, the tape is rewound to the question that was answered incorrectly and the same is replayed. The computer may be programmed to return to questions previously answered incorrectly any number of times during the lesson. The system is particularly suited for instruction in foreign languages but other subject matter may also be taught.
