A method and system for supporting a real-time communication on an integrated packet-based network involve accumulating information about the communication, referred to as signature data, while the communication is being setup and/or is in progress and storing the signature data in a database that is openly accessible to any applications that are connected to the network. Once signature data regarding an active real-time communication is accumulated, portions of the signature data may be utilized to further process the active real-time communication. Providing an openly accessible communication profile that is accumulated while the communication is in progress allows applications to provide a higher level of service by tailoring actions to the profile of the specific communication.

Call signature in a packet-based network

A method and system for personalized multimedia messaging include multiple communication mode interfaces which enable the system to communicate with multiple types of communication devices. Caller profiles are configured for preselected callers such that each caller profile includes at least one caller identifier representative of data patterns in incoming. calls received over the communication modes. The caller profiles are selectively configured to include personalized messages intended for a subset of the preselected callers and can also include caller identity verification data. A caller identification subsystem monitors the communication modes for incoming calls which include the data patterns. Upon detecting one of the data patterns, a processor accesses a corresponding caller profile and determines if the caller profile includes a personalized message. If a personalized message includes confidential subject matter, the processor can transmit a caller identity verification request to the incoming caller. The processor compares received caller identity verification data to stored caller identity verification data. If the received verification data matches the stored verification data, the messaging system transmits the personalized message to the caller. If no personalized message is associated with the caller profile, a general message is transmitted to the caller, which might include a greeting that directs the caller to leave a message. In a preferred embodiment, the personalized messaging system is included in an IVR system which enables callers to interface with the IVR system through multiple different communication modes based on the same set of personalized caller preferences.

System and method for personalized multimedia messaging

A PBX call discrimination system which provides voice, FAX, and data services utilizing one telephone number (DID) for each local line being serviced. The PBX connects incoming lines to local lines serviced by it. Each local line is identified by a DID received in a call setup message on the incoming line. The PBX stores information associating a voice call extension, a FAX line, and a modem line with each DID. The PBX identifies an incoming call as being a voice call, a FAX transmission, or a data transmission. The incoming call is connected to the FAX line associated with that DID if the incoming call is identified as a FAX transmission, and to the modem line associated with that DID if the incoming call is identified as a data transmission. FAX and modem servers can be connected to the PBX for directing FAX and data transmissions, respectively, to the intended called party. The routing information utilized by such servers is provided by the PBX.
