A system and method for cleaning dirty water is disclosed. The systems and methods may include two heat exchangers, including a high temperature/high pressure (HT/HP) heat exchanger that receives superheated steam and hydrogen gas and a low temperature/low pressure (LT/LP) that receives steam at a reduced temperature and pressure. The LT/LP heat exchanger provides first stage heating to dirty water that is input into the system for cleansing. The LT/LP heat exchanger has a first coil and a second coil. The first coil carries the dirty water to be cleaned. The HT/HP heat exchanger provides a second stage of heating to the dirty water that is output from the LT/LP heat exchanger. A first coil of the HT/HP heat exchanger carries the superheated steam and hydrogen gas. A second coil carries the preheated dirty water that is output from the LT/LP heat exchanger.

Method and apparatus for water purification using continuous hydrothermal oxidation regime

A power source () is disclosed for charging a battery () within a portable electronic device (). An apparatus (), such as a photovoltaic or thermoelectric cell, for charging the battery () is disposed contiguous to and within a transparent housing () of the portable electronic device (). A fluorescent species (), such as quantum dots or a fluorescent dye, is disposed on a side of the housing () opposed to the apparatus (). Light () striking the fluorescent species () is converted into photons () having a narrower spectrum that passes through the housing () to the apparatus (). An optional layer () may be disposed on the fluorescent species () that reflects light from the fluorescent species () to the apparatus (). Photonic crystals () may be combined with the fluorescent species () to increase reflectivity.

Apparatus for charging a battery of a portable electronic device

A field emission device () is provided that prevents electrical breakdown. The field emission device () comprises an anode () distally disposed from a cathode plate that includes an insulating substrate () having a portion exposed to the anode (), and a cathode metal () overlying another portion of the insulating substrate (). A gate electrode () overlies an oxide () above at least a portion of the cathode metal () and optionally above a portion of the substrate. A dielectric layer () is positioned between a resistive layer () and the cathode metal (), and substantially all of the exposed substrate, and underlies substantially all of the gate electrode () including its edges (), providing a resistance between the cathode metal () and the edges ().

Field emission device

An emission device is provided for extracting electrons onto an anode of a visual display. The emission device () includes a conductivity limited material () positioned between first and second electrodes () and having a surface (). A plurality of catalytic nanoparticles () are distributed throughout the conductivity limited material (), wherein some of the catalytic particles () are contiguous to the surface (). A plurality of nanostructures (), such as carbon nanotubes, are grown from the catalytic nanoparticles () contiguous to the surface (). A voltage is applied across the conductivity limited material () having a plurality of catalytic particles () embedded therein, thereby causing the electrons to tunnel between the catalytic particles (). An anode () is spaced apart from the nanostructures () for extracting and receiving electrons emitted from the nanostructures () when a first potential is applied across the first and second electrodes () and a second potential is applied to the anode ().

Emitting device having electron emitting nanostructures and method of operation

A method is provided for forming a porous metal catalyst () on a substrate () for nanotube () growth in an emissive display. The method comprises depositing a metal () onto a surface of a substrate () at an angle (&#x398;) to the surface, depositing a metal catalyst () onto the metal (), and forming nanotubes () on the metal catalyst ().

Method of forming a porous metal catalyst on a substrate for nanotube growth

A fabrication process is provided for reducing leakage current in a field emission display having at least one electron emitter () electrically coupled to a ballast resistor () coupled to a cathode metal (), wherein at least one defect () extends to a gate electrode () from a region () electrically coupled to the ballast resistor, the method comprising heating () to reduce the resistance of the ballast resistor; and applying () a voltage between the cathode metal and the gate electrode thereby creating a current through the at least one defect to create an electrical open therein.

Method for reducing leakage current in a vacuum field emission display

A spacer material is provided for a field emission display () with a cathode plate () having a plurality of electron emitters (). An anode plate () is disposed to receive electrons emitted by the plurality of electron emitters (), and includes an anode () designed to be connected to a potential source. A plurality of spacers () are positioned between the cathode plate () and the anode plate (), the plurality of spacers () comprising a material that maintains a positive charge when the anode () is connected to the potential source.

Spacer material for flat panel displays

An apparatus is provided for reducing color bleed in a flat panel display. The apparatus comprises an anode () with a plurality of phosphors () of at least two colors sequentially disposed thereon. A cathode () is arranged in parallel opposed position to and separated from the anode () and contains a plurality of pads () of emitters. Each pad () is disposed on the cathode () in spaced relationship to and aligned with one of the at least two colors, respectively, wherein electrons from each of the plurality of pads of emitters that drift from its intended phosphor () are encouraged to drift toward an adjacent phosphor () of the same color.

Field emission display

A field emission device and method of forming a field emission device are provided in accordance with the present invention. The field emission device is comprised of a substrate () having a deformation temperature that is less than about six hundred and fifty degrees Celsius and a nano-supported catalyst () formed on the substrate () that has active catalytic particles that are less than about five hundred nanometers. The field emission device is also comprised of a nanotube () that is catalytically formed in situ on the nano-supported catalyst (), which has a diameter that is less than about twenty nanometers.

Field emission display and methods of forming a field emission display

A method of removing, or otherwise rendering non-conductive, unwanted carbon nanotubes () from an electronic device () includes exposing at least a portion of the device to light emitted by one or more of light sources () that emit light. Those regions of the device that have wanted carbon nanotubes formed thereon can be selectively masked, by various methods, from the emitted light.

Method of reducing leakage current in electronic devices having carbon nanotubes

A method of fabricating a field emission device cathode using electrophoretic deposition of carbon nanotubes in which a separate step of depositing a binder material onto a substrate, is performed prior to carbon nanotube particle deposition. First, a binder layer is deposited on a substrate from a solution containing a binder material. The substrate having the binder material deposited thereon is then transferred into a carbon nanotube suspension bath allowing for coating of the carbon nanotube particles onto the substrate. Thermal processing of the coating transforms the binder layer properties which provides for the adhesion of the carbon nanotube particles to the binder material.

FED cathode structure using electrophoretic deposition and method of fabrication

An exemplary system and method for providing a multi-layer klystron-type electron beam device for the generation and amplification of millimeter-wave electromagnetic radiation is disclosed as comprising inter alia: a cathode layer (); a collector layer (); an extraction layer (); a control layer (); an input cavity (); an output cavity (); several ceramic spacer layers () dispose intermediately between the cathode () and the collector (); and optionally, several magnetic ceramic layers () for beam forming and focusing. After the klystron's layers are assembled, the device may be fired to form a substantially monolithic structure.
