A two component development system includes a plurality of toner particles that include a colorant and a plurality of toner carrier particles that include a magnetic carrier core having a Ddiameter in a range from about 30 microns to about 40 microns, and a surfactant-polymer coating, the coating being present in an amount in a range from about 0.5 percent by weight to about 1.5 percent by weight of the toner carrier particle.

Carrier for two component development system

Disclosed is a carrier suitable for use with an electrophotographic developer and an electrophotographic developer containing the carrier. In particular, the carrier is powder coated and comprises a copolymer of cyclohexylmethacrylate and dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate.

A carrier comprised of a core, and thereover a polymer coating containing a first polymer and a silicone resin, and which resin possesses an average diameter of from about 300 to about 3,000 nanometers.

Coated carrier

Carrier particles comprise a core and a polymer coating that comprises a mixture of polymethyl methacrlyate (PMMA) and melamine. The coating compositions comprise from about 60 to about 80 percent by weight of PMMA and from about 20 to about 40 percent by weight of melamine. The carriers may be combined with a toner to provide a developer suitable for use in an electrostatographic process. Carriers comprising the PMMA/melamine coatings exhibit increased triboelectric charging, a more conductive carrier, and also contribute to reducing toner cohesion.

Submicron sized particles of poly(methyl methacrylate) are prepared by a surfactant-free semi-continuous emulsion polymerization process that involves (i) preparing an aqueous phase containing a free radical initiator in water by heating and stirring, (ii) preparing a monomer composition containing at least 80% by weight methyl methacrylate and 1 to 10% by weight of a crosslinking agent, (iii) adding the monomer composition to the aqueous phase to initiate emulsion polymerization of the monomer composition, the adding being done at a rate such that from 0.05% to 5% by weight of the total weight of the monomer composition is added per minute, (iv) continuing heating and stirring following completion of the adding of the monomer composition for an amount of time, and (v) drying and recovering the submicron sized particles of poly(methyl methacrylate). The submicron sized particles of poly(methyl methacrylate are used in forming a coating of carrier particles for a two-component developer composition.

Surfactant-free semi-continuous emulsion polymerization process for making submicron sized particles for carrier coatings

An electrode wire for a hybrid scavengeless developer unit is electrostatically coated with a conductive coating comprised of a crosslinked polymer and a conductive material. The wire is coated by first electrostatically coating the wire with a coating composition including a crosslinkable polymer and a conductive material. Following electrostatic application of the coating, the coated wire is initially heated to a temperature above the melt temperature of the crosslinkable polymer and below the crosslinking temperature of the polymer for a time sufficient to permit the at least one polymer to flow out over the surface of the wire, and then further heated by increasing the temperature of heating above the crosslinking temperature of the polymer for a time sufficient to crosslink the polymer. A tough, substantially smooth coated electrode wire is achieved that, when used in a hybrid scavengeless developer unit, exhibits little to no buildup of toner or toner components on the surface of the wire, thereby eliminating image quality defects that might otherwise be caused by such buildup.

A coated carrier having a core particle coated with a mixture of an electronegative insulating polymer comprising a polyvinylidenefluoride polymer or copolymer and an electropositive conductive polymer comprising a polymethyl methacrylate polymer or copolymer with a conductive material dispersed therein is made by powder coating. The coated carrier has unique properties, including a conductivity of from 1.1&times;10,to 1.0&times;10,mho-cm,, a triboelectric charging value of from 12 to 20 and an average particle diameter of from 65 to 75, rendering the coated carrier ideal for use in a developer to be used in a magnetic brush type development apparatus. The powder coating method includes mixing the core particle and the mixture of negatively charging polymer and conductive polymer until the mixture of negatively charging polymer and conductive polymer adheres to the core particle, heating the mixture of the core particle and the mixture of negatively charging polymer and conductive polymer until the mixture of negatively charging polymer and conductive polymer melts and fuses to the core particle, and cooling the coated core obtained.

A process for the preparation of polymers which comprises generating a solution of water and polyvinyl alcohol with acetate groups; adding thereto a mixture of an alkali metal iodide and iodine; adding thereto initiator, and optional crosslinking agent; adding monomer, a mixture of monomers, or a monomer/polymer mixture; homogenizing, and polymerizing; and wherein there is formed an iodide/iodine/acetate complex prior to said polymerizing.
