Process to make low color polyetherimide by halo-displacement and low color polyetherimide

A method of manufacturing an isolated polyetherimide composition includes combining an as-synthesized polyetherimide comprising units of the formula (I) and a melt-stabilizing amount of a tri(Cacyl) glyceride, an anhydride of the formula (II), or a combination comprising at least one of the foregoing, to provide a mixture; and isolating a polyetherimide composition from the mixture to provide the isolated polyetherimide composition having a change in complex viscosity measured over 30 minutes at 390&#xb0; C., at a shear rate of 6.28 rad/seconds, strain=5%, and under nitrogen, from +15 to &#x2212;20%, preferably from +10 to &#x2212;20%, more preferably from +5 to &#x2212;20%.

A method for producing a reactive intermediate composition, including: reacting a substituted phthalic anhydride of the formula (I) with a diamine of the formula HN&#x2014;R&#x2014;NHin the presence of an aromatic dianhydride in an amount of 10 to 50 mole percent based on the total moles of anhydride functionality in the reaction; wherein the reacting is conducted in an aprotic solvent in a reactor, under conditions effective to produce the reactive intermediate composition; and wherein X comprises a halogen or a nitro group, and R comprises a Caromatic hydrocarbon group or a halogenated derivative thereof, a straight or branched chain Calkylene or a halogenated derivative thereof, or a Ccycloalkylene or a halogenated derivative thereof. 

Synthesis of reactive intermediates for polyetherimides, and uses thereof

A method for reducing yellowness of a polyetherimide solution, including exposing a first solution including a solvent and a polyetherimide to light under conditions effective to provide a second solution having a yellowness index that is 1 to 100 units less than the yellowness index of the first solution, as determined according to ASTM D1925. Another aspect is a method for reducing yellowness of a polyetherimide solution including acidifying a first solution including a solvent and a polyetherimide to provide a second solution having a pH less than 5 under conditions effective for the second solution to attain a yellowness index that is 1 to 30 units less than the yellowness index of the first solution, as determined according to ASTM D1925. Polyetherimides prepared according to the method, and compositions and articles including the polyetherimide are also described.
