Disclosed herein are compositions, which can be used to coat electrode plates, comprising at least one carbonaceous material and at least one additive, wherein the at least one additive comprises a metal ion selected from calcium, barium, potassium, magnesium, and strontium ion, and wherein the metal ion is present in an amount ranging from 0.5 wt. % to 3 wt. % relative to the total weight of carbonaceous material. Also disclosed are electrodes and lead acid batteries comprising such compositions, and methods of making the compositions.

Disclosed herein are cathode formulations comprising a lithium ion-based electroactive material and a carbon black having a BET surface area ranging from 130 to 700 m/g and a ratio of STSA/BET ranging from 0.5 to 1. Disclosed herein are cathode formulations comprising graphenes. One embodiment provides a cathode formulation comprising an electroactive material, and graphene interspersed with the electroactive material, wherein a ratio of (mean electroactive material domain size)/(mean graphene lateral domain size) ranges from 3:2 to 15:1. Lead-acid batteries and pastes therefor

A carbon black having a combination of properties with values in ranges selected to promote high conductivity, high hydrophobicity, and reduced outgassing in lead acid batteries while maintaining high charge acceptance and cycleability. The carbon black has a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area ranging from 100 m/g to 1100 m/g combined with one or more properties, e.g., a surface energy (SE) of 10 mJ/mor less, and/or a Raman microcrystalline planar size (L) of at least 22 &#x212b;, e.g., ranging from 22 &#x212b; to 50 &#x212b;. In some cases, the carbon black has a statistical thickness surface area (STSA) of at least 100 m/g, e.g., ranging from 100 m/g to 600 m/g.

A paste suitable for a negative plate of a lead-acid battery comprises at least (a) a lead-based active material and an expander mixture comprising (b) carbon, (c) barium sulfate and (d) a lignosulfonate, wherein at least part of at least two of said components (a) to (d) are present in the paste as composite particles.

In a method of producing a particulate electrocatalyst composition, a precursor medium comprising at least a first metal precursor, a liquid vehicle, and a substrate precursor to substrate particles is atomized into precursor droplets. The droplets are then heated to a reaction temperature of not greater than 700&#xb0; C. to form composite particles comprising said first metal at least partly in an oxide form dispersed on said substrate particles. The composite particles are then collected and are heated at a first treatment temperature no greater than 250&#xb0; C. in the presence of a reducing atmosphere to at least partly convert said oxide form to the metal.

Electrocatalyst compositions and processes for making and using same

A catalyst composition comprises a particulate support and catalyst nanoparticles on the particulate support. The catalyst nanoparticles comprise an alloy of platinum and palladium in an atomic ratio of from about 25:75 to about 75:25 and are present in a concentration of between about 3 and about 10 wt % weight percent of the catalyst composition. The catalyst composition has an X-ray diffraction pattern that is substantially free of the (311) diffraction peak assignable to PtPd, where 0.25&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.75.
