A mechanism for performing a communication using a visible light communication (VLC) protocol. The mechanism proposes to modulate a bus voltage provided to all lighting elements (comprising LED elements) of a lighting unit, so that the magnitude of light emitted by all lighting elements is modulated according to a same modulation scheme. The LED lighting device comprises at least two series-connected LED light sources with different color metric values and supplied with a current, each LED light source is controlled by a respective switch operating according to a duty cycle. The invention relates to a lighting device which is operable in two modes. In a first operating mode the flux of a lighting effect having a specified chromaticity is rendered based on the maximum (luminous) flux at which the chromaticity can be rendered by the lighting device. This can cause the maximum (luminous) flux across a range of colors that the lighting device can render to vary greatly. For example, a white color may be rendered at a far greater intensity than a primary color. In a second operating mode the specified chromaticity is rendered based on a predetermined maximum (luminous) flux for that specified chromaticity, or a color range that it is comprised in, or a predetermined maximum (luminous) flux for one or more color channels that are used in combination to render the light effect. This reduces the differences in maximum (luminous) flux of lighting effects rendered across the range of colors that are rendered by the lighting device.

A lighting circuit makes use of a switch mode power converter to drive a solid state lighting arrangement having a lighting unit and a lighting control switch. A pulse width modulation control signal is applied to the lighting control switch for dimming control with an activation pulse during which the lighting unit is activated. The power converter delivers a triangular current waveform and the activation pulse is delayed until a predetermined point within the triangular current waveform. This ensures that the PWM pulse during which the lighting arrangement is turned on has timing which is synchronized with the timing of the switch mode power converter. The prevents beat frequencies so that visible flicker is avoided.

The invention relates to an electric lamp () comprising a primary semiconductor light source () in thermal communication with a primary reflector (). Herein, the primary reflector () is reflective, transparent and/or translucent. The primary reflector () is configured for transferring heat generated by the primary semiconductor light source () during operation away from said primary semiconductor light, source (). As a result, the electric lamp () according to the invention effectively reduces the number of parts comprised in the electric lamp (), thereby lowering the costs of manufacturing the electric lamp ().

The invention provides an illumination device comprising an envelope enclosing a light source, preferably a LED, and a luminescent material. The envelope comprises a transmissive part, and a reflective part, wherein the reflective part comprises a reflective ceramic material. The ceramic material can be used for heat dissipation.

A lighting device has a plurality of LEDs of at least two types connected in series. At least one of the LEDs of the first type and LEDs of the second type is connected in parallel to a resistor assembly, such that the temperature-dependent resistance of the resistor assembly stabilizes a ratio of luminous flux output at different junction temperatures of the LEDs.

In a lighting device, sets of LEDs are employed using the natural characteristics of the LEDs to resemble incandescent lamp behavior when dimmed, thereby obviating the need for sophisticated controls. A first set of at least one LED produces light with a first color temperature, and a second set of at least one LED produces light with a second color temperature. The first set and the second set are connected in series, or the first set and the second set are connected in parallel, possibly with a resistive element in series with the first or the second set. The first set and the second set differ in temperature behavior, or have different dynamic electrical resistance. In various embodiments, the sum of the currents provided to the first and second sets may be substantially equal to a magnitude of an input current.
