A method of producing a low-fat product from a starting material made of a fat and/or oil containing plant- or animal item includes providing the starting material at a temperature of at least 35° C. and extracting a greater part of the extractable oil and/or fat originally contained in the plant or animal item from the starting material using a first decanter centrifuge. The first decanter centrifuge leaves a residue of solids and liquids. The residue forms the low-fat product.

The present disclosure relates to a heavy phase liquid discharge element, a centrifugal separator comprising the element and to a method of separating two liquid phases. The heavy phase liquid discharge element comprises at least one inlet opening on a first side of the heavy phase liquid discharge element, the at least one inlet opening being adapted to face an interior of the centrifugal separator, and at least two separate outlet channels defining an outlet on the second side of the heavy phase liquid discharge element, wherein at least a portion of each of the outlet channels overlaps with the at least one inlet opening, thereby forming a liquid pathway between the at least one inlet opening and the outlet defined by the at least two outlet channels through which the liquid can pass. By this design, pressure losses in the heavy phase liquid outlets can be decreased.

A screw conveyor for a centrifugal separator comprises a conveyor hub carrying a helical conveyor flight and providing a helical channel between adjacent turns of helical conveyor flight. The screw conveyor has an up-stream end and a down-stream end. At least two partition walls are arranged in a side-by-side relation to divide at least a radial part of a length of the helical channel into three sub-channels arranged in a side-by-side relation to cause a liquid flowing in the helical channel to flow in an up-stream direction towards the up-stream end in an intermediate sub-channel and in an opposite down-stream direction towards the down-stream end in two adjacent sub-channels on either side of the intermediate sub-channel.

A centrifugal separator includes a rotating body rotating in use around an axis. The rotating body comprises a bowl, which comprises a base at one longitudinal end of said bowl, said base defining a rear longitudinal area. An outlet passage extends through the base and an outlet housing is provided in the rear longitudinal area. The outlet housing is communicating with the outlet passage to receive liquid therefrom and the outlet housing has an outlet opening discharging in use liquid from the rotating body. The outlet opening comprises a weir edge defining in normal use a level of a surface of a liquid in the bowl. The outlet housing is rotatable around an adjustment axis and the outlet opening is placed in a side wall offset from the adjustment axis.

A centrifugal separator for liquids with two phases of different density includes a bowl with a base defining a first rear area in a casing. At least two outlet passages extend through the base. A first outlet passages communicates with a first outlet opening discharging liquid in the first rear area, and the second outlet passages communicates with a second outlet opening discharging liquid in a second rear area rear of said first rear area. A flange attached to the bowl and a partition of the casing with an annular sealing in between separates the first and the second rear area.

A centrifugal separator comprises a bowl rotating in use around an axis of rotation. The axis of rotation extends in a longitudinal direction, and a radial direction extends perpendicular to the longitudinal direction. A base plate provided at one longitudinal end of the bowl, said base plate having an internal and external side, an outlet opening being provided in the base plate. A casing is projecting at the outlet opening on the external side of said base plate, said casing comprising a casing side, a normal to said casing side extending at an acute angle relative to a circumferential direction of the bowl at said casing and a discharge opening is provided in said casing side. The discharge opening is radially outwardly limited by a weir with an overflow edge and said discharge opening extending radially inwardly to a position above a highest intended level of liquid in the bowl.

The centrifugal separator comprises a rotatable bowl having a separation chamber defined by a base. The base comprises a first outlet opening defined by a weir at a first level. An outlet chamber communicates with the separation chamber through a first outlet opening. The outlet chamber is connected with an outlet opening, which opens at a second level below the first level into an exterior of the bowl. The outlet chamber outlet opening is provided with an outlet nozzle with an outlet direction opposite the direction of rotation, and an overflow inlet opening is present in the outlet chamber, and is placed at a third level between the first and the second level. The overflow inlet opening communicates with an overflow outlet opening, that opens into the exterior of the bowl.

The decanter centrifuge comprises a screw conveyor having a body (), which carries a screw comprising one or more flights (') and having a nominal transport speed varying along the longitudinal axis. An inlet () is provided in the screw conveyor for the material to be separated. The screw conveyor is provided with a baffle (&#x2032;) dividing the separation chamber in a substantially cylindrical separation part () and an at least partially conical discharge part (). Immediately upstream of the baffle (&#x2032;) a transition part () is provided between the separation part () and the discharge part (), the screw conveyor () having a bigger nominal transport speed in the transition part () than in the separation part () immediately before the transition part (), the change of the nominal transport speed being established by a change () of the screw pitch.

A decanter centrifuge comprises a drum (1) with a conveyor (2) containing an inlet (4). The liquid to be separated flows in a jet centrally into the inlet (4) towards an end wall (11 ), at which the liquid is radially distributed and flows axially onwards towards the second end wall (13) through an area of the inlet (4) free of members imparting an angular velocity to the liquid. The inlet (4) is provided with inlet apertures (6) positioned on a radius larger than the radius to the overflow edge (9) at the liquid discharge. The design of the inlet (4) implies that the free liquid surface in the inlet during operation is drawn far towards the axis of the drum, thereby causing excess energy supplied to the liquid during acceleration to the angular velocity of the conveyor (2) to be dissipated in the comparatively thick liquid layer before the liquid discharges into the separation space (7) through the inlet apertures (6).
