A backup camera system integrates various capabilities in a common housing to deliver enhanced safety and convenience functions for less cost and improved utility. Apparatus such as an inertial measurement unit (IMU) may be used to automatically detect when the vehicle is moving in reverse, such that no signal is required from the vehicle to determine that the vehicle is moving in reverse. The IMU may further detect a crash situation. A sound or light generator may provide an alert to an area surrounding the vehicle. Integrated communications capabilities provide for remote control of various functions and the exchange of signals and information to remote devices facilitating vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure or infrastructure-to-vehicle communications. The system may further integrate proximity detection, imaging and computer-readable code interpretation, and GPS location.

Vehicular back-up camera system

An improved Center High Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL) harvests electrical power while providing additional features when the CHMSL is not powered during a brake application. Electronic circuitry determines if the different sources of electrical power have sufficient energy to activate the light-emitting device; senses a vehicle braking or emergency event to activate the light-emitting device upon sensing the event; and switches from one source of electrical power to a different source of electrical power if it is determined that a particular source of electrical power has become depleted or incapable of activating the light-emitting device. The different sources of electrical power may include a supercapacitor, a rechargeable battery, or a primary battery. The electronic circuitry operative to sense a braking or emergency event may include a brake signal input or an inertial measurement unit (IMU).

A vehicle system may include a wireless transmitters carried by a vehicle at spaced apart locations and configured to transmit wireless signals, and a portable device moveable relative to the vehicle and configured to receive the wireless signals from the wireless transmitters. A controller may be carried by the vehicle and configured to wirelessly communicate with the portable device, determine a predicted zone the portable device is located in from among a plurality of zones relative to the vehicle based upon the received wireless signals and training data, with the zones having respective vehicle functions associated therewith, and enable the respective vehicle function associated with the predicted zone.

System and method for locating a portable device in different zones relative to a vehicle based upon training data

A vehicle system may include wireless transmitters carried by a vehicle and spaced apart from one another and configured to transmit wireless signals, a portable device configured to receive the wireless signals from the wireless transmitters, and a controller carried by the vehicle. The controller may be configured to wirelessly communicate with the portable device, cooperate with the portable device to determine when the portable device enters into one of a plurality of different zones relative to the vehicle based upon the received wireless location signals, with the zones having different respective vehicle control functions associated therewith. The controller may also be configured to enable the respective vehicle control function associated with the zone entered into by the portable device.

A device for controlling access to a vehicle, the device including: a housing, the housing including a transmitter, a receiver, a microcontroller and an unlocking mechanism, wherein the housing is configured to be mounted to a vehicle and, in response to a triggering event at the unlocking mechanism, the microcontroller is configured to advertise itself to allow a previously linked remote device to connect and, once a connection is established with the remote device, the transmitter is configured to send an unlock signal to an electronic control unit inside the vehicle to unlock a door of the vehicle.
