A stretchable multiple-layer nanocomposite material is provided and includes at least a nanocomposite material layer comprising a network of nanotubes modified with an elastomeric polymer; and at least one additional layer laminated with the nanocomposite material layer. The number of nanocomposite layers and additional layers, the nature and composition thereof, may be varied in a surface direction and/or a thickness direction so as to provide tailored mechanical and physico-chemical properties to a resulting skin that can be used to produce morphing or deployable structures.

Stretchable nanocomposite skin material and related structures

A solution is provided comprising boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) in a liquid solvent. An optical waveguide, such as an optical fiber, is contacted with the solution so as to form a layer of the solution supported on at least a portion of the optical waveguide. The liquid solvent is then removed from the layer of the solution supported on the optical waveguide in order to form a coating of the BNNTs on the optical waveguide. Further provided is a BNNT coated optical waveguide for use as a sensor.

Boron nitride nanotube coated optical waveguide and uses thereof

A modified boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) comprising pendant hydroxyl (OH) and amino (NH) functional groups covalently bonded to a surface of the BNNT. Aqueous and organic solutions of these modified BNNTs are disclosed, along with methods of producing the same. The modified BNNTs and their solutions can be used to coat substrates and to make nanocomposites.

Modified boron nitride nanotubes and solutions thereof

The present application discloses methods for preparing superhydrophobic nano-microscale patterned films, films pre-pared from such methods and uses of such films as superhydrophobic coatings. The superhydrophobic nano- microscale patterned films comprise high aspect ratio nanoparticles such as boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and/or carbon nanotubes (CNTs).

Methods for preparing superhydrophobic nano-microscale patterned films

A two-step sc-SWCNT enrichment process involves a first step based on selective dispersion and extraction of semi-conducting SWCNT using conjugated polymer followed by a second step based on an adsorptive process in which the product of the first step is exposed to an inorganic absorptive medium to selectively bind predominantly metallic SWCNTs such that what remains dispersed in solution is further enriched in semiconducting SWCNTs. The process is easily scalable for large-diameter semi-conducting single-walled carbon nanotube (sc-SWCNT) enrichment with average diameters in a range, for example, of about 0.6 to 2.2 nm. The first step produces an enriched sc-SWCNT dispersion with a moderated sc-purity (98%) at a high yield, or a high purity (99% and up) at a low yield. The second step can not only enhance the purity of the polymer enriched sc-SWCNTs with a moderate purity, but also further promote the highly purified sample to an ultra-pure level. Therefore, this two-step hybrid process provides sc-SWCNT materials with a super high purity, as well as both a high sc-purity (for example greater than 99%) and a high yield (up to about 20% or higher).

Process for purifying semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes

A process for producing boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) involves providing a one or more sources of boron, nitrogen and hydrogen to a stable induction plasma to form a reaction mixture of boron, nitrogen and hydrogen in the plasma, and cooling the reaction mixture to form BNNTs. The process is capable of very efficiently producing small (10 nm or less diameter), reasonably pure BNNTs continuously in high yield at or around atmospheric pressure without the need to use metals as the catalyst. The process may be further modified by providing one or more sources of carbon to produce BNNTs doped with carbon (e.g. BCNNT).

Boron nitride nanotubes and process for production thereof

Compounds are attached to carbon nanotubes (CNT) by a process which comprises: subjecting surface treated CNTs which have been treated to induce negatively charged surface groups thereon, to nucleophilic substitution reaction with a compound carrying a functional group capable of reacting with the negatively charged groups on the CNT surface, whereby the compound chemically bonds to the CNT. The surface CNT treatment may be reduction. The compounds which are bonded to the CNT may be epoxy resins, bonded directly or through a spacer group. Bi-functional CNTs, grafted to both epoxy resins and other polymers such as polystyrene, are also made by this process.

Nucleophilic substitution of carbon nanotubes

Modified carbon nanotubes are provided having carbon nanotube core covalently bound through C&#x2014;C bonds to a polymer shell surrounding the carbon nanotube core. The polymer shell is a polymer having functional groups pointing outwardly from the shell. The functional groups are compatible with or able to covalently connect to another polymer. Such modified carbon nanotubes are more readily dispersed in a homogeneous manner in another polymer and may be used as a reinforcing filler in a polymer matrix. The modified carbon nanotubes with a core-shell structure in which the core has a substantially unidirectional orientation within the shell are produced by reacting neutral carbon nanotubes with 4-vinylaniline through a diazonium reaction in presence of one or more types of multifunctional monomers carrying a vinyl moiety and one or more functional groups for compatibilization with or connection to another polymer. The reaction is conducted at an elevated temperature without isolation of intermediates and without addition of any extra initiator or catalyst to form a polymer shell in situ around the carbon nanotube. The polymer shell is covalently bound to CNT sidewall through C&#x2014;C bonds and has functional groups outwardly pointing from the shell for compatibilization with or connection to another polymer.

Modified carbon nanotubes and their compatibility

An integrated method and apparatus to continuously produce purified Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWNT) from a continuous supply of solid carbon powder fed to an induction plasma torch. The apparatus includes a reactor body disposed to maintain laminar flow of gases with the torch body and coupled to a quenching body where temperature and residence time is controlled. Conveniently, functionalization may take place in the quenching body. The torch is operated with an argon carrier gas, an argon stabilizing gas and a helium sheath gas. Solid carbon reactants are preferably mixed with at least two metal catalysts containing nickel and cobalt with additional metal oxides of yttrium and cerium being desirable.

Method and apparatus for the continuous production and functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes using a high frequency plasma torch

The present invention provides methods to functionalize and solubilize WCNT with a phenolic polymer such as a lignin or a PF resin followed by in-situ integration of this functionalized CNT in the presence of formaldehyde and phenol and/or lignin to generate either CNT-reinforced phenol-formaldehyde polymer or CNT-reinforced lignin-phenol-formaldehyde polymer in either liquid or powder form suitable as an adhesive in the manufacture of a lignocellulosic composite material such as OSB and plywood.

Phenol-formaldehyde polymer with carbon nanotubes, a method of producing same, and products derived therefrom

Epoxy resins are chemically attached to carbon nanotubes (CNTs), in a one-step process in which a reaction mixture comprising the epoxy polymer, the CNTs and a bridging agent which is a chemical compound capable of forming living polymers, e.g. styrene or MMA is formed and radical formation is initiated in the reaction mixture; the epoxy polymer or monomer grafts onto the CNTs through the intermediary block of the bridging agent.

Block functionalization methods

The invention relates to a process for formation of carbon nanotubes. The process comprises laser ablation of a bulk metal catalyst within a hydrocarbon solution to produce a feedstock containing metal catalyst nanoparticles. The feedstock is atomizing to form a feedstock aerosol. The aerosol is heated to form naotubes. An apparatus for forming carbon nanotubes is also disclosed. Nanoparticles formed in the feedstock according to the invention can be controlled to achieve a narrow size distribution, which ultimately allows for good control over size and chirality of the nanotubes formed.
