A method of forming a coating on a food or beverage container, which includes spraying a coating composition onto an interior surface of the food or beverage container, where the coating composition includes a latex copolymer and a metal drier or crosslinking agent. The latex copolymer is a reaction product of monomers that include (a) one or more styrene-mimicking monomers containing one or more cyclic groups and one or more ethylenically-unsaturated groups, at least a portion of such styrene-mimicking monomers being polycyclic monomers containing ring unsaturation, and (b) one or more other ethylenically-unsaturated monomers. Preferably, the coating composition is substantially free of each of BPA, PVC, other halogenated monomers, and optionally styrene. The method may also include curing the sprayed coating composition, thereby providing the coating on the interior surface of the food or beverage container.

Crosslinked coating compositions for packaging articles such as food and beverage containers

A method of forming a coating on a food or beverage container, which includes spraying a coating composition onto an interior surface of the food or beverage container, where the coating composition includes an emulsion-polymerized latex copolymer having copolymer chains of one or more mono-unsaturated monomers that are cross-linked with one or more multi-unsaturated monomers. The method also includes heating the sprayed coating composition to cure the coating composition, thereby providing the coating on the interior surface of the food or beverage container.

The present invention provides novel packaging articles, e.g., food and beverage cans, having a novel coating composition applied to at least a portion of a surface thereon. In preferred embodiments, the coating composition includes at least a film-forming amount of a copolyester resin having a backbone that includes one or more soft segments and a plurality of hard segments. The copolyester resin preferably has a glass transition temperature from about from about 10&#xb0; C. to about 50&#xb0; C. The present invention also provides a method for making coated articles.

The present invention is based upon a coating system that uses polycyclic polyester polymers and phenolic resins. The coating system comprises first and second coatings. The first coating preferably is derived from ingredients comprising a polycyclic polyester resin having first and second fused rings that share at least two atoms in common. The second coating preferably is derived from ingredients comprising a polycyclic polyester resin that may be different than the polyester of the first coating.
