A CMOS integrated circuit comprising digital-to-analogue converters (DACs), analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs), a digital signal processor (DSP), on-chip switching, an on-chip processor; and logic enabling to receive data from data sources in a 5G network, combine the data from the data sources into a single data stream, encode the single data stream using the DSP, and cause the encoded single data stream to be transmitted to another device in the 5G network.

An optical receiver includes a demodulator having a delay interferometer comprising an optical input that receives a phase modulated optical signal from a bandwidth limited transmission system. The delay interferometer has a free spectral range that is larger than a symbol rate of the phase modulated optical signal by an amount that improves receiver performance. The receiver also includes a differential detector having a first and a second photodetector. The first photodetector is optically coupled to the constructive optical output of the delay interferometer. The second photodetector is optically coupled to the destructive optical output of the delay interferometer. The differential detector combines a first electrical detection signal generated by the first photodetector and a second electrical detection signal generated by the second photodetector to generate an electrical reception signal.

Partial DPSK (PDPSK) transmission systems

In an optical transmitter, continuous wave light from a laser passes through a data modulator (DM) for non-return-to-zero (NRZ) encoding of a data stream and through a pulse modulator to add return-to-zero encoding to the modulated optical signal. A modulator controller monitors the output optical signal power, optimizes the bias setting for the DM and the PM, and optimizes the phase relationship between the pulse and data components of the modulated optical signal. For each optimization, a low amplitude and low frequency dither signal is injected at appropriate points in the modulator. A single photo detector and electrical receiver are used in a multiplexed fashion to monitor the optical output signal and derive separate feedback signals. Remaining control circuitry forces a null in a respective residual dither component in the optical output signal to maintain the desired bias level or phase alignment.

Control of an optical modulator for desired biasing of data and pulse modulators

Different techniques for generating spectrally efficient carrier-suppressed modulated optical signals, also known as 'phase-shaped binary transmission' (PSBT) signals, employ electrical components that generate only 2-level or binary signals, in contrast to techniques that require 3-level electrical drivers. The PSBT modulators can be used with return-to-zero (RZ) modulators for generating RZ-PSBT signals, which have the characteristic of even greater spectral efficiency than NRZ PSBT signals. The technique is generalized to RZ signals with an arbitrary phase difference between pulses. These signals can be generated by shifting the central (carrier) frequency of an RZ modulated optical signal, which can be done using a certain phase modulation or using spectral filtering with a passband offset from the center (carrier) frequency of the modulated optical signal, and the signals can also be generated by phase modulation at a frequency lower than the signaling rate of the modulated signal.

Methods and apparatus for spectrally efficient optical modulation

An optical transmission system is formed to include an optical phase conjugator at alternate repeater sites to minimize the presence of four-wave mixing and other Kerr effect nonlinearities in systems using optical fiber transmission paths (particularly in systems using DWDM and launching relatively high power signals into the low dispersion fiber). Raman gain is included in each fiber span (or in alternate fiber spans) so as to provide a &ldquo;negative absorption&rdquo; along the length of the fiber and thereby provide for essentially symmetrical power distribution along the length of each span, where the presence of such a symmetric,power distribution on each side of an optical phase conjugator has been found to significantly improve its performance.

Optical transmission system with reduced Kerr effect nonlinearities

An optical translator that includes an interferometer and a plurality of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) coupled to the interferometer. The at least two of the SOAs receives data and a clock signal. The data is received by the at least two SOAs at different times. A coupler combines each of a respective output of the at least two SOAs to provide output data. The output data is a retimed and a reshaped signal of the data provided to at least one of the plurality of SOAs.

Optical regeneration and wavelength conversion using semiconductor optical amplifier based interferometers

A method for modulating fiber optic transmissions with a low sensitivity to fiber non-linearity utilizes short pulses (typically shorter than 20 ps), and bit rates of 10 Gb/s and higher, to improve performance relative to heretofore known nonlinear transmission with Return-to-Zero (RZ) format implementations. At a base bit rate of 40 Gb/s, a distance determination for achieving 100% cumulative dispersion compensation is made, and a predetermined amount of pre-dispersion compensation is applied based on a determined distance using lower duty cycles for transmission. Higher bit rates (i.e., higher than 40 Gb/s) broaden the spectral bandwidth of the transmission and can result in no pre-dispersion compensation or negative distance pre-dispersion compensation of the same sign as the transmission fiber.

Modulation format with low sensitivity to fiber nonlinearity

An optical element for simultaneously retrieving the tributary data rate and the clock frequency from the line rate of an OTDM signal. The demultiplexing and clock recovery principle is based on injection locking of a high-Q-filtered and high gain loop with a variable phase delay and an EA-modulator with high non-linear response, i.e., absorption verses applied voltage. A modulator that is preferably an EA-modulator, an amplifier preferably an erbium doped fiber amplifier (&ldquo;EDFA&rdquo;), a base band receiver, an electronic amplifier, a high-Q filter, and a variable phase delay are arranged in a loop to provide an oscillator for simultaneously retrieving tributary data rate and clock frequency.

Demultiplexing and clock-recovery circuit

The specification describes an optical transmission system for high speed, high capacity digital pulse transmission, i.e. at least 10 Gb/s at a duty cycle of at least 10%, which uses transmission fiber with a dispersion value greater than 20 ps/(nm-km) or more negative than &minus;5 ps/(nm-km). The system operates in the pseudo-linear transmission mode (PLTM). In the PLTM it was discovered that pulse distortion decreases, i.e. eye closure penalty actually decreases, as the dispersion value increases. System performance actually improves by increasing the value of absolute dispersion of the transmission fiber.

High-dispersion fibers for high-speed transmission

A wavelength division multiplex (WDM) cross-connect architecture that can selectively cross-connect, at a wavelength granularity, wavelength channels from any of a plurality of input WDM optical facilities (e.g., fibers) to any of a plurality of output WDM optical facilities. The architecture is based on multi-wavelength modules, which are capable of routing simultaneously N wavelengths. The number of required modules scales only with k or less (i.e., k modules with N complexity), where k is the number of input/output fibers. The significant reduction in complexity is traded for a decrease in blocking performance; one of the disclosed architectures is strictly non-blocking in the space domain and rearrangeably non-blocking in the wavelength domain, whereas two others are rearrangeably non-blocking in both the wavelength and space domain. Since the wavelength channels are optically multiplexed in the interconnection fibers, only a small number of optical amplifiers are needed to compensate for the inevitable transmission loss in the interconnection fabric.
