A downhole pumping assembly has a tubing string with plural barrels which are arranged in-line with the tubing. The tubing string has a seating location adjacent to each barrel. A standing valve arrangement, which includes a standing valve and a seating device, is located with the standing valve adjacent to the lower end of one of the barrels. A plunger has a traveling valve that is located for reciprocation within the one barrel. The plunger has a clearance with each of the barrels so as to form a fluid seal. The plunger reciprocates inside the barrel so as to lift fluid to the surface. Over time, the barrel will exhibit wear. Instead of pulling the entire tubing string to replace the barrel, the standing valve and the plunger are relocated to one of the other barrels located in the tubing string and reciprocation is resumed to resume pumping.

A downhole pump has a barrel and a plunger. The barrel has a first one-way valve and the plunger has a second one-way valve. The plunger is of the box end type. The pump prevents or minimizes gas lock by achieving high compression in the compression chamber between the two valves. The second valve is located close to the bottom end of the plunger. In the second valve, the valve seat is in contact with the seat plug, which seat plug has a seal. Alternatively, the valve seat is incorporated into the seat plug, which seat plug also has a seal. The plunger lacks reliefs at the bottom end and thereby achieves tight tolerances with the barrel, further contributing to high compression.

A stuffing box for a polished rod used with a downhole pump uses injectable packing to provide a seal around the polished rod. The stuffing box has a chamber for receiving the packing. The chamber has an opening to allow the addition of packing to the chamber. The packing is maintained in a compacted condition by either injecting additional packing through the opening or adjusting the volume of the chamber.

A downhole pump for a well has a barrel and a plunger. The barrel has a passage extending along the length of the barrel, with the passage having an inside diameter. The plunger has an outside diameter and is received by the barrel passage for relative reciprocal movement. One of the barrel or the plunger is equipped with wear rings, with a wear ring at one or at each end. The wear rings are made of a material that is harder than the material of the respective plunger or barrel. The wear rings provide protection from abrasion, particularly in a sandy well.

A downhole pump has a barrel and a plunger which reciprocate with respect to each other. The plunger has a first portion with a first seal, a second portion and a third portion with a second seal. The second portion is intermediate the first and second portions. A balancing chamber is formed between the plunger second portion and the barrel. The balancing chamber communicates with the plunger interior by way of an opening. A sand snare chamber is provided with respect to the opening so as to prevent sand from contacting the seals in the balancing chamber.

A reciprocating downhole pump has a gas separator located at its bottom end. The separator forms a chamber that is expanded and contracted when the pump is reciprocated. Expansion and contraction of the chamber occurs by either the plunger reciprocating in the chamber or a piston coupled to the plunger reciprocating in the chamber. The chamber has an orifice therein so that during reciprocation fluid flows in and out of the orifice. The orifice is sized so as to subject the fluid to a pressure drop, wherein gas in the fluid is separated from the liquid.

A downhole pump having a barrel with a reciprocating plunger therein has at least one valve. The valve has a cage, a seat and a ball. The cage has a passageway extending between two ends, with the passage including a ball chamber. The ball chamber is between a perforated member and a stop. The ball is located in the ball chamber between the perforated member and the seat, which abuts the stop. The ball is movable along a raceway. The raceway has ribs with channels therebetween. The raceway skews away from a longitudinal axis of the ball chamber from the seat toward to the perforated member. The raceway can be made of a material that is either harder or softer or the same as the hardness of the inner wall of the ball chamber. In another embodiment, the valve has a throat with a stop for receiving a seat. The ball chamber has portions that are hardened. The clearance between the ball and the hardened portions of the ball chamber is at least twice as large as the clearance between the ball and the throat.

The downhole pump has a barrel with a reciprocating plunger therein. The barrel has a first one-way valve, while the plunger has a second one-way valve. A barrel chamber is formed between the two one-way valves. The barrel chamber expands when the reciprocal movement between the plunger and the barrel is an upstroke movement and then contracts when the reciprocal movement is a downstroke movement. A bypass channel is provided between the barrel and the plunger so as to provide communication around the plunger and its one-way valve. The bypass channel is open when the reciprocal movement is near an end of the upstroke movement. When open, pressure across the plunger can equalize and gas inside the barrel chamber can vent around the plunger and/or pressure can equalize across the plunger one-way valve so as to prevent gas lock and minimize stress on the sucker rods. The bypass channel can be provided by reducing the diameter of the lower end of the plunger, increasing the diameter of the upper end of the barrel, putting grooves in the plunger or the barrel or by making the barrel out of two sections, namely a lower section and a wider upper section and providing holes in the lower end of the plunger below the plunger one-way valve.
