The anvil has an anvil face and a first staple pocket defined by the anvil face, where the first staple pocket comprises a first cup and a second cup for staple formation. The cartridge has a first staple and a first driver. The first staple, once deployed by the first driver and deformed by the first staple pocket, has a formed configuration in which a first portion of a first staple leg and a second portion of a second staple leg are bent relative to a crown and cross the midpoint of the crown and one of the first portion and the second portion overlaps the other of the first portion and the second portion.

End effectors, surgical stapling devices, and methods of using same

An end effector for use by a surgeon to staple an anatomical structure of a patient during a minimally invasive procedure can include an anvil, a cartridge, and a knife. The anvil includes a proximal end, a distal end, and a face that is positionable on a first side of the anatomical structure. The cartridge is configured to house a plurality of staples and includes a proximal end, a distal end, and a face that is positionable on a second side of the anatomical structure. The knife has a cutting edge, the knife being operably configured to move from a first position at about a distal end of the end effector to a second position at about a proximal end of the end effector. The distal end of the anvil is movably coupled to the distal end of the cartridge.

An end effector for use by a surgeon to staple an anatomical structure of a patient during a surgical procedure includes an anvil and a cartridge. The anvil has an anvil face and a first staple pocket defined by the anvil face, where the first staple pocket comprises a first cup and a second cup for staple formation. The second jaw has a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis, and a cartridge, which has a cartridge face positionable on a second side of the anatomical structure. The end effector includes a first coupling that couples the first end of the first jaw to the first end of the second jaw; and a second coupling that movably couples the second end of the first jaw to the second end of the second jaw and includes a rigid link connected to the first jaw and the second jaw.

An end effector for stapling and cutting an anatomical structure includes an anvil, a cartridge, and a blade. The anvil has an anvil face and a plurality of staple pockets positioned on the anvil face. The cartridge has a cartridge face defining a cartridge blade channel, the cartridge being configured to retain a plurality of staples. Each of the plurality of staples comprises a first staple leg, a second staple leg, and a crown connecting the first and second staple legs and having a midpoint. An end effector for use by a surgeon to staple an anatomical structure of a patient during a minimally invasive procedure, the anatomical structure having a first side and a second side, the end effector including an anvil that includes a first end, a second end, and a face, and a cartridge that is configured to house a plurality of staples and that includes a first end, a second end, and a face, and an engagement element that movably couples the first end of the anvil to the first end of the cartridge, and a knife, the knife having a first flange, a second flange, and a web including a cutting edge, and where the second end of the anvil is movably coupled to the second end of the cartridge, each of the anvil and the cartridge is insertable through a trocar, and the end effector is remotely operable from outside the patient.

Embodiments include a clamp for a medical procedure, the clamp having a first clamp member having a first end and a second end, a second clamp member having a first end and a second end, a hinge, the hinge coupling the first ends of the first and second clamp members, a biasing member, the biasing member coupling the second ends of the first and second clamp members, the biasing member being configured to apply a first clamping force in a first stage, and a second clamping force in a second stage, where the second clamping force is greater than the first clamping force.

One or more medical devices may be provided that may be used, for example, in bariatric surgery including a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. The one or more medical devices may include a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy stapling guide in conjunction with a calibration tube in accordance with one or more examples. According to an example, the calibration tube may be a flared, multi-diameter calibration tube. The flared, multi-diameter calibration tube may have a first diameter along a portion of the tube and a second diameter that may larger than the first diameter along at least another portion of the tube. The calibration tube may be used in conjunction with the stapling guide to align stomach such that it may be stapled along the stapling guide (e.g., to perform the vertical sleeve gastrectomy).
