In one embodiment, the invention discloses a method for adapting educational content. The method comprises generating data for each of a plurality of students, the data pertaining to an aspect of the student's interaction with an educational system; combining the generated data to form a combined data set; analyzing the combined data set to identify clusters, each representing similar students according to a mathematical model; and adapting the educational system to provide a customized learning experience for a particular student based on an identified cluster.

Network browsers and other applications can obtain computer software components from a computer network like the Internet or an intranet in a uniform, portable, architecture-neutral, robust manner. The computer software components obtained can be used to provide a variety of new multimedia functionality to an application program.

An object-oriented framework comprises system services, objects, and integration interfaces which unify retrieval and browsing of data among multiple different application programs, document formats, and local and remote data storage sites. The framework provides a hyperlink object which encapsulates general hyperlink navigation functions. The present invention provides a method in a computer system of integrating a compression system with an operating system. The computer system preferably comprises at least a memory device and one storage device. A user-supplied device driver is provided for storage devices that are not supported by the computer system to enable the computer system to communicate with the storage devices. In response to initialization of the computer system, the operating/compression system is loaded into the memory device and begins executing before any user-supplied device drivers are loaded into the memory device. Any compressed volume files located on the computer system are assigned drive letters at this time. When the user-supplied device drivers are loaded into the memory device, drive letters are assigned to the various storage devices. A drive letter conflict resolution scheme is provided to resolve conflicts that occur when the operating system attempts to assign a drive letter. The compression system assigns drive letters to compressed volume files (in the case where a compressed drive is created from free space on an existing drive) or to host drives (in the case where the contents of an existing drive are compressed).

Creators of computer software provide the most up-to-date versions of their computer software on an update service. A user who has purchased or downloaded free computer software calls an update service or a network service provider (e.g., an Internet provider) on a periodic basis. The update or network service automatically inventories the user computer to determine what computer software (e.g., a network browser) may be out-of-date, and/or need maintenance updates. If so desired by the user, the update service computer automatically downloads with a secure software transfer process and installs computer software to the user computer. By making periodic calls to an update or network service, the user always has the most up-to-date computer software immediately available. The update or network service may also alert the user to new products (i.e. including new help files, etc.), and new and enhanced versions of existing products which can be purchased electronically by a user and transferred immediately from the update or network service. When an upgrade is available, a tag in a hypertext document indicates an upgrade should be automatically downloaded from a location provided in the tag when the hypertext document is browsed by a computer having a browser.

An improved compressed file system is provided. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a memory cache is used for storing uncompressed data that is sent to or received from a compressed logical drive. When writing data to the compressed logical drive, the preferred embodiment of the present invention determines whether to use write-behind caching or write-through caching.
