In one aspect, a control plane Interworking Function (IWF-C) is used to establish a Packet Data Unit (PDU) session in a data communications network. A create session request is received, for example from a Mobile Management Entity (MME). A create session management context request is generated by the IWF-C and transmitted to a Session Management Function (SMF). A create session management context request response is received from the SMF. A create session request response is generated by the IWF-C and sent, for example to the MME. In other aspects, control plane policy interworking and user plane interworking is provided between components of 4G and 5G networks.

Traffic is transferred between a first consumer network node and a second consumer network node via a local connection established at a first service provider network node. The first service provider network node is connected to the first consumer network node via a first attachment circuit, and to the second network consumer node via a second attachment circuit. A loss in connectivity is detected between the first consumer network node and the second consumer network node via the local connection, and in response, traffic is transferred between the first consumer network node and the second consumer network node via a remote connection. The remote connection includes a pseudowire established between the first service provider network node and a second service provider network node. The second consumer network node is connected to the second service provider network node via a third attachment circuit.

Each compute server in the plurality is capable of running one or more virtual machines. At a multicast group membership discovery protocol proxy located on a compute server in the plurality, a multicast group membership discovery protocol report message is received requesting delivery of data associated with a specified multicast group from a specified multicast data source. It is determined whether the specified multicast data source is hosted by a virtual machine running on the compute server. In response to a positive determination, a request corresponding to the received multicast group membership discovery protocol report message is forwarded to the virtual machine hosting the specified multicast data source on the compute server.
