A rigid thermoplastic polyurethane with improved melt strength can be prepared by deactivating the catalyst for the polymer subsequent to the onset of urethane bond formation. Catalyst deactivation is accomplished either with a latent deactivator for the catalyst, or an active deactivator. The further addition of a crosslinker to the reaction mixture can provide an even greater improvement of melt strength.

The toughness of a thermoplastic, rigid polyurethane is markedly improved by incorporating a mass ABS resin such as styrene/butadiene rubber grafted with a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile. Disclosed are novel high flexural modulus polyurethane plastics wherein a polyisocyanate and a particular combination of extenders including cycloalkane diol are reacted optionally in the presence of a minor proportion of high molecular weight polyol. The polymers have outstanding resistance to high temperatures thereby expanding their utilities into higher temperature end-use environments than related prior art materials. Certain members of these new polymers are also possessed of outstanding optical clarity which thereby provides a combination of properties heretofore not available in a polyurethane. These polymers are easily melt-fabricated notwithstanding their inherent high temperature properties.

Improved thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers are disclosed which are the reaction product of 4,4'-methylene-bis(phenyl isocyanate); a polymeric diol; and an extender wherein the equivalent proportions of said diol to said extender fall within the range of about 1:2 to about 1:20 and the isocyanate to total hydroxyl equivalents are within the range of about 0.99:1 to 1.06:1, the improvement which comprises replacing at least about 15 percent by weight of said polymeric diol by a polyol selected from the class consisting of: (i) polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene glycols having a molecular weight of about 3500 to about 4500 and an ethylene oxide content of about 10 to about 60 percent by weight; (ii) polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene triols having a molecular weight from about 5000 to about 7000 and an ethylene oxide content of about 10 to about 40 percent by weight; and (iii) mixtures of (i) and (ii). The elastomers find particular utility in the manufacture of ski boots, hockey boots and automotive exterior panels, bumpers, fascia, and the like.

Novel polyurethane product

An improved process for the preparation of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers by a one-shot reaction of an organic diisocyanate, a polymeric diol, and a diol extender is disclosed wherein the diol components, either singly or together, are treated with a trivalent phosphorus compound prior to their reaction with the diisocyanate in the presence of a stannous tin urethane catalyst. The process when carried out with pure urethane grade diol components results in very efficient catalysis which in turn requires lower levels of stannous tin catalyst than would otherwise be employed. Moreover, the process can be carried out with diol components that are not urethane grade materials but which are contaminated by high levels of peroxidic impurities and which materials would otherwise be useless for the preparation of high grade elastomer products.

Process for improving thermoplastic polyurethanes

The processing temperatures of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers are reduced, and the extrudability and the sensitivity to degradation by shear and by moisture are improved, by including a minute proportion (from 0.0005 to 0.05 equivalents, per equivalent of isocyanate) of a monohydric aliphatic alcohol in the reaction mixture (diisocyanate, polymeric diol and difunctional extender) employed to prepare thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers by the one-shot procedure.

The processing temperatures of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers are reduced, and the extrudability and sensitivity to shear and moisture are improved, by employing as the diisocyanate, in the preparation of said elastomers, the product obtained by reacting 4,4'-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) with a monohydric aliphatic alcohol. Use of the latter also counteracts batch-to-batch variations in reactivity of 4,4'-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate).
