A hydrogen storage system includes a hydrogen storage alloy containment vessel comprising an external pressure containment vessel and a thermally conductive compartmentalization network disposed within the pressure containment vessel. The compartmentalization network creates compartments within the pressure vessel within which a hydrogen storage alloy is disposed. One or both of the compartmentalization network and the pressure vessel may be formed by a 3D printing process, such as by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and/or Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS). The hydrogen storage alloy is a non-pyrophoric AB-type Laves phase hydrogen storage alloy having: an A-site to B-site elemental ratio of not more than 0.5; and an alloy composition including (in at %): Zr: 2.0-5.5, Ti: 27-31.3, V: 8.3-9.9, Cr: 20.6-30.5, Mn: 25.4-33.0, Fe: 1.0-5.9, Al: 0.1-0.4, and/or Ni: 0.0-4.0.

3D printed hydrogen storage systems using non-pyrophoric hydrogen storage alloys

A hydrogen storage system includes a hydrogen storage alloy containment vessel comprising an external pressure containment vessel and a thermally conductive compartmentalization network disposed within the pressure containment vessel. The compartmentalization network creates compartments within the pressure vessel within which a hydrogen storage alloy is disposed. The compartmentalization network includes a plurality of thermally conductive elongate tubes positioned within the pressure vessel forming a coherent, tightly packed tube bundle providing a thermally conductive network between the hydrogen storage alloy and the pressure vessel. The hydrogen storage alloy is a non-pyrophoric AB-type Laves phase hydrogen storage alloy having: an A-site to B-site elemental ratio of not more than 0.5; and an alloy composition including (in at %): Zr: 2.0-5.5, Ti: 27-31.3, V: 8.3-9.9, Cr: 20.6-30.5, Mn: 25.4-33.0, Fe: 1.0-5.9, Al: 0.1-0.4, and/or Ni: 0.0-4.0.

Hydrogen storage systems using non-pyrophoric hydrogen storage alloys

Hydrogen storage alloys comprising a metal oxide containing &#x2265;60 at % oxygen; and/or comprising a metal region adjacent to a boundary region, which boundary region comprises at least one channel; and/or comprising a metal region adjacent to a boundary region, where the boundary region has a length and an average width, where the average width is from about 12 nm to about 1100 nm; and/or comprising a metal oxide zone comprising a metal oxide, which oxide zone is aligned with at least one channel; and/or comprising a Ni/Cr metal oxide have improved electrochemical properties, for instance improved low temperature electrochemical performance.

Hydrogen storage alloys

A hydrogen storage alloy material includes a primary phase having an ABtype structure and a secondary phase having a Bstructure that enhances the electrochemical properties of the alloy. The A component of the primary phase includes La and Ce, and the B component of the primary phase includes Ni, Co, Al, and Mn. The secondary phase may include Al, Mn, and Ni. Also disclosed are battery systems including the alloy material.

Synergistic multiphase hydride alloy

A hybrid power cell is provided that combines a nickel-metal hydride battery, solid state hydrogen storage, and alkaline fuel cell technologies in a single cell operating within a targeted intermediate temperature range. A cell includes a cathode that is capable of using raw atmospheric air as an oxygen source and an anode that is capable of reversible electrochemical and gas phase hydrogen storage, where the anode and the cathode are highly functional at intermediate temperatures. The resulting hybrid power cell overcomes prior challenges of reliable high-capacity grid-tied energy storage necessary for greater renewable energy adoption.

Shared electrode hybrid battery-fuel cell system

A fundamentally new magnesium-based hydrogen storage alloy material which makes it feasible and practical to use solid state storage and delivery of hydrogen to power internal combustion engine or fuel cell vehicles. These alloys have remarkable hydrogen storage capacity of well over 6 weight percent. The alloys also have extraordinary absorption kinetics such that the alloy absorbs 80 percent of its total capacity within five minutes. The alloys are in particle form where the particles have a size ranging from 30 to 70 microns. The alloys also have a dual phase structure (formed by cooling from the melt at a cooling rate of 10  &deg; C.). The dual phase structure is such that an intergranular region surrounds a major hydrogen storage phase thus providing the alloys with resistance to sintering during high temperature hydriding/dehydriding cycling thereof. As a result of the dual phase structure, the alloys have an extended cycle life.

Disordered multicomponent hydrogen storage material characterized by extraordinarily high storage capacity due to a high density of useable hydrogen storage sites (greater than 10.sup.23 defect sites/cc) and/or an extremely small crystallite size. A microwave plasma enhanced PVD/CVD apparatus and method. The apparatus includes an evacuable deposition chamber having a plasma region and a deposition region adjacent one another. The apparatus also includes a source of microwave energy, and a microwave waveguide to transfer microwave energy from the source thereof to the plasma region. Additionally, the apparatus includes a plate, crucible or boat for holding solid or liquid starting materials within said plasma region, and a system of flow controllers and gas transport tubing for introducing gaseous materials into the plasma region, the interaction of the microwave energy with the gaseous materials forms a plasma within the plasma region. The plasma provides thermal energy for the evaporation of the solid or liquid starting materials and causes the reaction of any reactive gases or vapors present in the plasma region. A substrate holder is positioned within the deposition region for holding a substrate upon which the deposited material is collected and a system of pumps, valves and exhaust tubing is attached to the deposition chamber for evacuating the deposition chamber and venting undeposited waste gases and vapors. The method involves the steps of providing an evacuable deposition chamber having a plasma region and a deposition region adjacent one another; positioning a substrate within the deposition region; providing solid or liquid starting materials within the plasma region; evacuating the deposition chamber; providing a source of microwave energy; transferring microwave energy from the source thereof to the plasma region; introducing gaseous materials into the plasma region; interacting the microwave energy with the gaseous materials to form a plasma within the plasma region, the plasma providing thermal energy for the evaporation of the solid or liquid starting materials and causing the reaction of any reactive gases or vapors present in the plasma region; depositing the evaporated and reacted species upon the substrate to form a thin film of deposited material; and venting undeposited waste gases and vapors from the deposition chamber.
