A safety vial system has a vial adapter subsystem irreversibly mountable to the top of a vial containing a hazardous medicament and a vial base subsystem sealingly engaging a lower portion of the vial adapter subsystem and telescopically movable therein from a first position providing a path for gas sterilization around the vial to a second position wherein the path is closed to form a sterilized expandable, neutral pressure bellows chamber around and below the vial. The device has a removable top cap, a pierceable barrier film, a normally closed needleless valve in fluid communication with a dual lumen spike initially disposed above the film and a frangible product integrity ring holding the activation housing in place for sealed telescopic movement on a main body that surrounds the vial. The user pulls the product integrity ring and removes it, and then pushes the activation housing axially downward until it clicks to lock the device in the activated position wherein both lumens of the spike are in communication with the inside of the vial. The user removes the top cap on the activation housing assembly, and then uses a needleless syringe with an adapter thereon to add diluent and mixes if needed and withdraw drug from the vial via the valve.

In one aspect, the invention is directed to a port assembly for establishing fluid communication between a first container and a second container. The port assembly includes a retainer for connecting a first container, where the retainer is positioned in a cavity defined by a port housing that includes an axially fixed actuator. The housing also includes a plug member constructed to seal a fluid passageway between the port housing and an interior of a second container. The plug member is configured to move axially relative to the actuator. Rotation of the retainer relative to the actuator causes the plug member to move to an open position in which it does not seal a fluid passageway between the port housing and an interior of a second container. The rotation of the retainer relative to the port housing also causes the retainer to move axially relative to the port housing so that the actuator forces a stopper associated with a first container connected to the retainer into a first container.

The port assembly includes a port housing for connection to a second container, and a retainer for connection to a first container, wherein the retainer rotates relative to the port housing and is constructed to move axially within the port housing. A sensor-dispensing instrument is adapted to determine an analyte concentration of a fluid and comprises a body, a cap, a cartridge, a test-sensor receptacle, and a sensor-advancement mechanism. The cap is adapted to move between an open position and a closed position. The cap and body are adapted to correspond with each other to form the closed position. The cartridge contains a plurality of test sensors. The cartridge is located substantially within the cap. The sensor-advancement mechanism is adapted to advance the plurality of test sensors, one at a time, to a position that allows a user to manually remove the test sensor and place the test sensor in the test-sensor receptacle. The sensor-dispensing instrument may also include a lancing device including a lancet.

A method and apparatus are provided for processing a nucleic acid. The apparatus includes a disposable self-contained processing module that contains the nucleic acid and substantially all of the fluids to effect a nanoparticle hybridization test, a pump coupled to the processing module, a valving system disposed between the pump and processing module and a control system coupled to the pump and valving system causing the processing fluids to interact with the nucleic acid to effect a sandwich hybridization test using nanoparticles.

A pelvic support unit is coupled to a base by a powered vertical force actuator mechanism. A torso support unit, which is affixed to the patient independently of the pelvic support unit, is connected to the base by one or more powered articulations which are actuable around respective axes of motion. A control unit is coupled to these sensors and, responsive to signals from them, selectively control the displacement actuator and articulation(s).
