Novel hapten compositions consisting of 4-[4-[2-(aminopropyl)]phenyl]butanoic acid and its N-methyl derivative are useful in preparing immunogens which can be respectively employed in the elicitation of antibodies selective to amphetamine and methamphetamine. These antibodies can be used as reagents in immunoassays for these two compounds.

Hapten compositions

Epinephrine and norepinephrine type catecholamines can be individually assayed by immunoassay directed against the side chain common to these compounds by employing an oxidation procedure which selectively converts one or more of the epinephrine or norepinephrine type catecholamines to another compound which is not bound by the antibody. By measuring the difference between the total epinephrine or norepinephrine type catecholamine content and that after each of the oxidation steps, it is possible to determine the quantity of individual catecholamines of either type present in the original sample.

Immunoassay for catecholamines

A process for the preparation of heterocyclic compounds containing one nitrogen atom and novel 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-3-benzazepines prepared by this process are disclosed. The resulting heterocyclic compounds, including the novel 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-3-benzazepine derivatives, exhibit analgesic, appetite suppressant, and anti-edema activity.

Intermediates in the preparation of 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-3-benzazepines

New hapten compositions useful in preparing antigens which may be employed in eliciting antibodies useful in an improved radioimmunoassay for pharmacologically active phenethylamines are disclosed. Particular phenethylamins which are preferably detected by the present radioimmunoassay include the catecholamines such as norepinephrine, dopamine and epinephrine, and the amphetamines.
