Embodiments presented provide for a distributed ground single antenna ion source used in scientific experimentation.

Distributed ground single antenna ion source

An ion generating device including a time-varying electromagnetic power source; and a multi-antenna ion source including a plurality of live antennas electrically coupled to the power source; and a grounded antenna. A neutron generator, including a time-varying electromagnetic power source; a hermetically-sealed tube; a multi-antenna ion source within tube, the multi-antenna ion source including a plurality of live antennas electrically coupled to the time-varying electromagnetic power source; and at most one grounded antenna; an extractor adjacent to an aperture of the multi-antenna ion source; at least one magnet generating a magnetic field substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the multi-antenna ion source; a target within the hermetically-sealed tube; and a plurality of electrodes for accelerating and/or decelerating ions toward the target, where the power source operates at a frequency corresponding to a cyclotron frequency defined by a value of the magnetic field within the multi-antenna ion source.

Compact multi antenna based ion sources

A gravimeter, a gravimeter system, and a method for measuring gravitational acceleration within a borehole are described herein. The gravimeter includes a proof mass that is constrained by springs and an optical interferometer for measuring displacement of the proof mass. The optical interferometer generates a light path from a light source to a reflective surface on the proof mass. Spatial displacement of the proof mass from a reference position to a position of gravitational equilibrium is determined by measuring a change in length of the light path. In turn, gravitational acceleration can be determined from the spatial displacement of the proof mass. A number of such gravimeters can be used in a gravimeter system to make measurements of gravitational acceleration in variety of different directions.

Systems, devices and methods for borehole gravimetry

A dielectric loaded accelerator for accelerating charged particles, such as electrons, ions and/or protons, is described herein. The dielectric loaded accelerator accelerates charged particles along a longitudinal axis and towards an outlet of the accelerator. The dielectric loaded accelerator accelerates the charged particles using oscillating electromagnetic fields that propagate within the accelerator according to an electromagnetic mode. The dielectric loaded accelerator described herein includes an electromagnetic mode with a phase velocity that increases towards the outlet of the accelerator and matches a velocity of the charged particles being accelerated along the longitudinal axis of the accelerator. By matching the phase velocity of the oscillating electromagnetic fields to the velocity of the charged particles, the accelerator reduces phase slippage between the fields and the charged particles and, therefore, efficiently accelerates charged particle towards the outlet.

Dielectric loaded particle accelerator

An ion source for use in a radiation generator includes an active cathode configured to emit electrons on a trajectory away from the active cathode, at least some of the electrons as they travel interacting with an ionizable gas to produce ions. In addition, there is at least one extractor downstream of the active cathode having a potential such that the ions are attracted toward the at least one extractor.

Ion source having negatively biased extractor

An ion source for use in a radiation generator includes a sealed envelope containing an ionizable gas therein. The ion source also includes a RF antenna external to the sealed envelope, the RF antenna to transmit time-varying electromagnetic fields within the sealed envelope for producing ions from the ionizable gas. There is at least one extractor within the sealed envelope having a potential such that the ions are attracted toward the at least one extractor.

A method of generating ions in a radiation generator includes emitting electrons from an active cathode and on a trajectory away from the active cathode, at least some of the electrons as they travel interacting with an ionizable gas to produce ions. The method also includes setting a potential of at least one extractor downstream of the active cathode such that the ions are attracted toward the at least one extractor.

Systems and methods are provided for determining a property, e.g., density, of a geological formation based on Einstein's theory of gravitation. A gravitational potential difference is determined between two positions of the geological formation by measuring a frequency shift of radiation travelling from a source to an absorber of a differential gravimeter. The differential gravimeter can be a part of a downhole tool. The gravitational potential difference determined can be used to determine the property of the geological formation.
