A device and method for operating a lighting system varies a characteristic of visible light emitted by a first lighthead according to a predefined profile, and fixes a characteristic of visible light emitted by a second lighthead. A light sensor configured to view a focal area of the second lighthead detects a characteristic of visible light on a target surface over a period of time, and the characteristic of the light detected by the light sensor over the period of time is compared to the characteristic of light defined in the predetermined profile. A mode of operation of the first and second lighthead is determined based on the comparison.

A light head for a medical device support system. The light head includes first and second zones of light sources, an optical system, and a control system. The first and second zones of light sources emit respective first and second beams of light that form an illumination pattern having a pattern size at a region of interest. The optical system adjusts a beam spread of the second beam of light to change the pattern size of the illumination pattern from a first pattern size to a second pattern size. The control system varies power to the first and second zones of light sources in response to adjustment of the beam spread of the second beam of light to maintain a substantially constant magnitude of illuminance at the region of interest as the pattern size is changed from the first pattern size to the second pattern size.

A HID solid state retrofit lamp includes a circumferential array of solid state light sources mounted on circuit boards, a heat sink located in the lamp's interior volume, and a fan positioned in the interior volume to force airflow across the heat sink. A capper assembly includes at least one aperture to vent the interior volume, and an intermediate circuit board within the capper assembly. The intermediate circuit board distributes electrical power to the circuit boards by tabs and contacts extending from the boards that are mechanically bonded together. An optical transmissive shield is positioned exterior to the circumferential array, and can include prismatic structures to direct light emitted from the LED sources in an off axis direction.

Materials and optical components formed thereof that are suitable for use in a lighting apparatus to impart a color filtering effect to visible light. At least a portion of such an optical component is formed of a composite material comprising a polymeric matrix material and an inorganic particulate material that contributes a color filtering effect to visible light passing through the composite material, and the particulate material comprises a neodymium compound containing Ndions.

Embodiments of a lamp that utilizes a reflector and a light source with light-emitting diode (LED) devices to generate an optical intensity distribution substantially similar to that of a conventional incandescent light bulb. These embodiments utilize an operation configuration with parameters that define relationships between components of the lamp to generate the optical intensity distribution. These parameters can, in one example, set out the position of the reflector relative to the light source as well as the ratio between dimensions of the reflector and the light source. In one embodiment, the reflector is in position relative to the light source to form a blocking area proximate the light source that defines a part of the lamp that does not diffuse light.

An optical element for transmission of light produced by a solid state emitter includes at least one diffuser element, and a reflector supported by the at least one diffuser element and paced-apart from the emitter, the reflector defining an annular lip having an aperture therein and an axis normal to a plane defined by the aperture. The reflector further includes a first frustoconical surface coupled with the annular lip and angling outwardly in a first direction at a first angle relative to the axis, a second frustoconical surface coupled to the first frustoconical surface and angled outwardly at a second angle in a second direction opposite to the first direction, and a third surface coupled with the second frustoconical surface and angling outwardly at a third angle.

LED based lamps are disclosed. In an embodiment, an LED based lamp includes a concave optical diffuser, a concave neodymium-doped glass bulb, a reflector, a printed circuit board that includes a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) configured to emit light, and a heat sink body. The concave optical diffuser has a first interior volume, and the concave neodymium-doped glass bulb is positioned within the first interior volume. The neodymium-doped glass bulb defines a second interior volume, and both the reflector and the printed circuit board are positioned within the second interior volume. The reflector includes a sloped annular wall with an inner reflective surface and an outer reflective surface, and a bottom portion of the reflector is connected to the printed circuit board. The heat sink is thermally connected to the printed circuit board and to the reflector.

Embodiments of a lamp that distributes light from one or more light emitting diode (LED) devices with an intensity distribution having a batwing appearance. These embodiments can comprise a lens having a lens body with different types of optics to achieve the preferred distribution. In one example, the lens body has a first section with optics that embody a plurality of prismatic facets and a second section with optics that form a convex shape, curving outward relative to the LED device.

The present disclosure describes embodiments of an optical system for use in a lighting device, e.g., replacements for MR/PAR/R directional lamps. In one embodiment, the optical system comprises optical elements (e.g., a lens element) with features that form light from a light source into a light beam. In one embodiment, the optical elements have a plurality of focus points, which do not all converge to a single focus point proximate the light source. Rather one or more of the focus points are spaced apart from the light source so the collective configuration of focus points causes the light beam to exhibit favorable characteristics.

A lighting apparatus with uniform illumination distribution, according to various embodiments, can include a lens for area lighting. In one embodiment, the lens comprises a plurality of cross-sections identified by a thickness ratio defined at different angles. The thickness ratio is determined relative to the thickness of the cross-section defined at a center angle of the lens. In another embodiment, the lighting apparatus with uniform illumination distribution includes a lens having an inner surface and an outer surface. A profile of the inner surface and the outer surface is composed of a plurality of piecewise circular arcs defined with radii and circle centers. The lens is formed as a complex curve lens by joining the piecewise circular arcs of the inner surface and the outer surface.
