A device adapted for attachment to a coupler of a trailing railcar of a train includes an enclosure defining an internal compartment, a port adapted for connection to an air brake hose receiving air from a brake pipe of the train, a handle extending from the enclosure, a communication device disposed within the internal compartment of the enclosure, and at least one antenna connected to the communication device and extending at least partially through the internal compartment of the enclosure and into an internal cavity of the handle.

A communication system may be provided that includes a lead communication assembly configured to be disposed onboard a lead vehicle in a multi-vehicle system, and a remote communication assembly configured to be disposed onboard a remote vehicle in the multi-vehicle system. The lead communication assembly and the remote communication assembly may be configured to communicate with each other via a wired connection extending along the multi-vehicle system from at least the lead vehicle to at least the remote vehicle. Additionally, the lead communication assembly and the remote communication assembly may also be configured to communicate with each other via a wireless connection. The lead communication assembly and the remote communication assembly may also be configured to switch back-and-forth between communicating with each other via the wired connection and via the wireless connection.

A system is provided that include at least one positioning system that can detect a location or position of a vehicle or a portion of a vehicle group that includes the vehicle, at least one sensor positioned on or associated with the vehicle that can generate sensor data of a determined parameter or condition, and a controller in communication with the sensor and the positioning system. The controller can determine that a hazard event has occurred based at least partially on sensor data, and can communicate a hazard event notification based at least in part on the location data and the sensor data to a remote server.

Alerting system and method

A braking system conducts an electronic command signal via a cable extending through multiple first vehicles in a first segment of a multi-vehicle system. The electronic command signal directs engagement or release of an air brake coupled to a brake pipe that extends along a length of the multi-vehicle system. A pneumatic command signal is communicated via the brake pipe to one or more second vehicles in a second segment of the multi-vehicle system. The pneumatic command signal directs one or more of the engagement or the release of the air brake coupled to the brake pipe in the one or more second vehicles.

In a method of determining a length of a train, a first camera at the head of the train acquires a first image of a first object on or proximate a path of the train and a second camera at the end of the train acquires a second image of a second object on or proximate the path of the train. A controller determines a length of the train based on a first geographical location associated with the first object in the first image and a second geographical location associated with second object in the second image. The first and second geographical locations of the first and second objects can be determined from corresponding prerecorded images of the objects that are geotagged with the geographical locations of the objects.

A hazardous event alert system for a train includes a sensor, a communication device, a positioning system, and a computer. The sensor is positioned on or associated with the train and configured to sense or monitor at least one parameter or condition. The computer is programmed or configured to determine that a hazardous event occurred based at least partially on data generated by the at least one sensor, determine or receive the location or position of the at least a portion of the train from the at least one positioning system, generate a hazardous event notification based at least partially on the at least one condition and the location or position of the at least a portion of the train, and communicate the hazardous event notification to at least one of a back office system and at least one remote server associated with at least one specified entity.

An end of train device includes an enclosure having an exterior and a hollow interior housing a plurality of components; and a protective arrangement disposed within the hollow interior of the enclosure and fitted at least partially around at least one component housed within the hollow interior. The protective arrangement defines at least one compartment for the at least one component of the plurality components. The protective arrangement at least partially supports and isolates the at least one component from the enclosure. The device also includes an impact resistant handle disposed on the exterior of the enclosure. The handle is configured to absorb impacts without causing substantial deformation to the enclosure.
