The invention is a method and system for customizing media content distributed by a multicast network based on a stored user profile. A new high quality video distribution method is disclosed. A new system supporting targeted, interactive advertising is taught. The tracking of media content consumed in the home is enabled. Media content producers are provided with a new connection to media content consumers. Unwanted media channels are no longer distributed to a customer.

Method and system for providing customized media content

A method and system for integrating location based services into retail applications. Correlation-data and request-trigger logic are stored in data storage of a portable device. The correlation-data defines geographic locations and corresponding network addresses. The portable device determines its geographic location (i.e. by using a GPS receiver device). In response to determining its location, the portable device uses the request-trigger logic to determine if its present location is within a geographic area defined in the correlation-data. When the request-trigger logic finds that the location is within a defined area, the portable device responsively sends an information-request to a network address pre-correlated with the given location. In response to the information-request, the portable device receives merchant-information (i.e. coupons, special offers, etc.) from a merchant-server. The portable device displays the merchant information for viewing by a user. Advantageously, the invention can help avoid having merchants 'spam' the device with unwanted information.

Method and system for integrating location based services into retail applications

Integrated echo cancellers in a telecommunications system are tested using a test apparatus connected to the main communications trunk where a large number of individual signals are multiplexed together. The signals are de-multiplexed in the test apparatus and specific amounts of echo delay, echo magnitude, and line delay can be introduced for any selected signals within the group on the trunk. The signals are then re-multiplexed and returned to the trunk in a direction back toward the echo canceller.

The invention is a method and system for customizing a plurality of hospitality site amenities based on a stored user profile. Certain check-in procedures are reduced or eliminated. Hospitality sites are able to provide a guest with an abundance of personalized services without a corresponding increase in staff size. Guests experience customized hotel amenities, environments, and media renderings.

A communication system is disclosed comprised of a primary Ethernet broadcast system, a node, and a secondary Ethernet broadcast system. The primary Ethernet broadcast system broadcasts multiple video channels each corresponding to an Ethernet address. The node receives a request for a video channel. The node determines the Ethernet address of the selected video channel and transmits a response to the request that includes the Ethernet address of the selected video channel.

A communications and database delivery service within an internetwork interacts with a service provider and its requestors/customers. A server is maintained for storing requester identifiers and service provider identifiers. A records database is maintained for storing records of digital information for customers of the service provider in accordance with the requester identifiers. An initiation message is received from a requestor over the internetwork. A notification is sent of a requested two-way video session to an IP address corresponding to the service provider. After an acceptance is received from the service provider, signals are provided over the internetwork to enable the two-way video session between respective workstations of the requestor and the service provider. A respective record is retrieved from the records database corresponding to the requester. The respective record is forwarded to the IP address corresponding to the service provider.

Method of providing digital data service to users of video telephony calls

A central server stores a database of global IP addresses for establishing TCP/IP sessions with other users of computer networks. One user system transfers a data call request to the central server system over a public data network. The central server system identifies the global IP addresses of the calling and called users and determines which ones of the calling and called users is connected to the public data network via a firewall. Depending upon the presence of firewalls, the central server configures the data call to enable direct, point-to-point packet transmission of network packets between the calling and called users without relaying them through the central server.

Fixed station equipment automatically determines whether a telephony user is in close proximity to the station and then automatically adopts a profile that properly directs calls according to whether the user is 'in-office' or is 'away.' Call controls are automatically set corresponding to predetermined profiles of the user, and the station includes a computing device and a fixed telephone outlet. It is detected whether a short range, mobile transmitter corresponding to the user is within a predetermined distance of the station. When the transmitter is within the predetermined distance, then a near-station profile is adopted for the user, wherein the near-station profile directs calls within the IP telephony system to the fixed telephone outlet. When the transmitter is not within the predetermined distance, then an away profile is adopted for the user, wherein the away profile directs at least some calls within the IP telephony system to the user via a wireless communication system.

A network apparatus includes a plurality of service-option resources, each resource having a respective numerical network address. An address server stores the numerical network addresses together with a respective logical name corresponding to each numerical network address. The address server responds to queries by providing a numerical network address corresponding to a logical name contained in a respective query. A plurality of service selection gateways are coupled to the service-option resources and the address server. Each service selection gateway 1) receives user traffic from a respective user directed to a nominal destination, 2) determines if the nominal destination should be redirected to a respective logical name corresponding to one of the service-option resources in response to a respective user profile, and 3) queries the address server for a respective numerical network address to redirect according to the respective logical name.

A centralized gateway connects to a broadband digital network for receiving various types of video feeds. The gateway provides output television signals directly to conventional inputs of standard television receivers. Port extenders connected to the gateway via a local-area network allow users to select a video feed sent by the gateway to a television associated with each port extender. The port extenders each provide a convenient and low cost termination point for keyboards, mice, joysticks, digital cameras, and other peripheral devices to interact with computer-based network services via the centralized gateway. The capabilities of the port extenders and the gateway provide a substitute for a personal computer in basic Internet access activities as well as a lower cost system for providing network based video programming to multiple televisions.

A data call between at least two internetworked computers is established using a central server. Once the data call is in place, prerecorded motion video is shared between the two computers by creating a streaming video server on one user's computer for streaming the prerecorded motion video simultaneously to both users as clients of the streaming server. Either user can pause, rewind, or fast forward the streamed video as it is viewed by both users.

A data call between at least two internetworked computers is established using a central server. Once the data call is in place, any types of data, information, or computer resources are shared between the two computers, regardless of protocol or data format, by creating a virtual server on one user's computer for serving the shared information simultaneously to both users as clients of the virtual server.

An end-user communication device comprises a telephony interface, network interface, and control circuitry. The telephony interface exchanges telephony signals with a telephone connection to a telephone. The network interface exchanges Internet Protocol (IP) packets with an IP interface for an IP connection to a first service provider. The control circuitry interworks between the telephony signals and the IP packets. For a set of the IP packets being transferred to the IP interface, the control circuitry places a first IP address in the first set of the IP packets for use by the first service provider to route the first set of IP packets over a peer-to-peer IP connection to a second service provider and places packet telephony network addresses in the first set of the IP packets for use by a packet telephony network in the second service provider to provide telephony service.

A network architecture of the invention is structured to provide highly effective and flexible security features while greatly simplifying the user experience.
