A simulation environment is disclosed. A simulator generates a simulation model corresponding to a sequence of simulation cycles, each cycle including initial conditions, propagatable states, and a level of simulation fidelity. A fidelity optimizer monitors states and conditions through each cycle, changing the fidelity level for the next cycle based on predetermined factors (e.g., a new flight segment). The fidelity optimizer may dynamically increase or decrease the fidelity level for the next cycle (or for one or more nodes within a group) in response to, or in anticipation of, a state change. The fidelity optimizer may sample several corresponding simulation cycles of varying fidelity levels to compare the effects or results, and determine whether the result is dependent on the fidelity level.

A system and method are provided for implementing unmanned aircraft system (UAS) deconfliction schemes by accepting representations of UAS flight plans in disparate native forms, and to converting them into a common format in support of evaluating potential conflicts, and providing flight plan approval/disapproval, and/or flight plan execution restrictions or warnings regarding potentially conflicting manned and unmanned aerial vehicle operations. The disclosed UAS Traffic Management (UTM) scheme may validate a UAS flight plan based on the provided flight plan representation, approving or disapproving the flight plan, and may provide suggestions for modification of a submitted UAS flight plan to enhance operational deconfliction without completely rejecting, through disapproval, the flight plan. Different levels of alerts and/or warnings may be provided to alert the UAS platform operators and National Airspace System operators/controllers to potential conflicts and conflict avoidance.

A method for behavior based Friend/Foe/Neutral determination is disclosed. The method receives RF communications from a plurality of perceived entities and records a plurality of first level characteristics of the RF communications. The method determines, from an analysis of the first level characteristics a plurality of second level characteristics of the RF communications. From these second level characteristics, the method determines transmission patterns of the entities over time which lead to an ultimate classification of the perceived entity as a Friend/Foe/Neutral based on the patterns.

This disclosure describes a cognitive network management system (CNMS) for managing a communication node including a radio platform. The system includes an engines layer including at least one sensor engine configured to collect sensor information relating to a location of the communication node and also includes a CNMS core including at least a database storing system settings and policies. The CNMS core is configured to communicate with the engines layer, receive the sensor information and store it in the database, and control the operations of engines layer and the radio platform based on the policies. The system further includes a cognition/learning based analysis module configured to receive the sensor information from the CNMS core, to analyze the effects of the policies based on the sensor information, and to modify the policies and store them in the database to improve system performance.

An apparatus for sensing and classifying radio communications is provided. The apparatus includes one or more sensor units configured to detect radio frequency signals, a signal classifier configured to classify the detected radio frequency signals into a classification, the classification including at least one known signal type and an unknown signal type, a clustering learning algorithm capable of finding clusters of common signals among the previously seen unknown signals. The system is then further configured to use these clusters to retrain the signal classifier to recognize these signals as a new signal type.
