Systems and methods for displaying annotations associated with an electronic document. One system includes an electronic computing device with an electronic processor configured to display a user interface on a display device. The user interface includes a canvas displaying a first subset of content included in the electronic document and a region scrollable independent from the canvas. The electronic processor is also configured to display a first plurality of annotations in the region. Each of the first plurality of annotations are associated with an anchor within the first subset of the content and displayed spaced within the region in at least one dimension based on spacing of the associated anchors. The electronic processor is further configured to change the region to display a second plurality of annotations in the region in response to changing the canvas to display a second subset of the content included in the electronic document.

Architecture generates low resolution placeholder content that preserves the usefulness of application responsiveness by preserving and displaying the structure of the content. This facilitates decreased memory requirements associated with pre-rendering structurally-intact content. The architecture enables the storing of pre-rendered content at a lower zoom level than is intended for actual display to require fewer resources, pre-rendering content at a lower zoom level to allow the application to adjust for the lower zoom level to provide more structural integrity than would be achieved rendering at full display zoom level and compressing the resulting data, stretching the pre-rendered content to the zoom level that is intended for display in order to achieve a low resolution appearance that merges directly with the full resolution content, and transitioning between low resolution content and full resolution content when the full resolution content becomes available.

A conversion tool that is automatically launched enables file formats not understood by a given application to be opened by that application. The converter registers for file types that are not already associated with an application used by the system. When a file that is not supported by another application is opened, the converter automatically converts the file to the target format and then opens the file causing the application that is registered for the target format to be launched.

Embodiments are described for removing malicious code from a file in a first file format by converting the file into a converted file of a second file format. In embodiments, converting the file eliminates malicious code embedded within the file from being stored in the converted file. The conversion is performed within a restricted computer process that has restricted privileges limiting its access to an operating system and an underlying computer system. As a result, even if malicious code embedded within the file executes while the file is being converted into the converted file, the damage to a computer system is mitigated because of the limited privileges provided to the restricted process.
