A fluid delivery apparatus includes controller hardware, a diaphragm pump, a positive displacement pump, and a fluid conduit extending between the diaphragm pump and the positive displacement pump. During operation, and delivering fluid to a downstream recipient, the controller hardware draws fluid into a chamber of the diaphragm pump from a fluid source container. The controller hardware applies pressure to the chamber of the diaphragm pump to output the fluid in the chamber of the diaphragm pump downstream through the fluid conduit to the positive displacement pump. During application of the pressure to the chamber and outputting the fluid in the chamber of the diaphragm pump downstream, the controller hardware activates the positive displacement pump to pump the fluid from the positive displacement pump to the downstream recipient.

Fluid flow control and delivery via multiple fluid pumps

A controller in a fluid delivery system controls magnitudes of pressure in a first volume and a second volume. The first volume is of a known magnitude. The second volume is of an unknown magnitude and varies. The controller estimates a temperature of gas in the first volume and a temperature of gas in the second volume based on measurements of pressure in the first volume and measurements of pressure in the second volume. The controller then calculates a magnitude of the second volume based on measured pressures of the gases and estimated temperatures of gases in the first volume and the second volume.

Fluid flow measurement and control

A controller controls a fluid pump to deliver primary fluid from a first source at a desired rate through a respective conduit to a recipient. The controller monitors a volume of the primary fluid injected into the conduit. Subsequent to injecting a predetermined amount of the primary fluid into the conduit, the controller i) discontinues injection of the primary fluid into the conduit and ii) injects a secondary fluid through the conduit to advance a remaining portion of the primary fluid in the conduit to the recipient. The controller advances the secondary fluid into the conduit until a desired amount of the primary fluid is delivered trough the conduit to the recipient. Injection of the secondary fluid to push the remaining portion of the primary fluid reduces waste associated with the primary fluid.

Injecting a supplemental fluid in a conduit to deliver a primary fluid

A fluid pump device includes an elastically deformable conduit, multiple volume displacement elements, and a controller. During operation, the controller controls movement of the multiple volume displacement elements (such as compensation volume displacement elements and occluding volume displacement elements) with respect to the elastically deformable conduit at different times to cause flow of fluid in the elastically deformable conduit downstream to a recipient. The controller controls movement of the multiple volume displacement elements to volumetrically balance: i) an input flow rate of input fluid conveyed from a fluid source downstream to an input of the elastically deformable conduit, and ii) an output flow rate of output fluid delivered from an output of the elastically deformable conduit downstream to a recipient.

A fluid delivery system comprises: a control interface and multiple unique loading guides. The control interface of the fluid delivery system is configured to accept a fluid pump assembly. The multiple loading guides are retractable from the fluid delivery system to retain and control movement of a facing of the fluid pump assembly to contact the control interface on the facing of the fluid delivery system. In one configuration, the control interface is disposed in a cavity of the fluid delivery system; the multiple loading guides are disposed at locations in proximity to the cavity. The multiple loading guides can be configured to slidably retract in unison to support substantially orthogonal insertion of the fluid pump assembly into the cavity of the fluid delivery system.

Fluid pump assembly and loading of same into a fluid delivery system

In accordance with one embodiment, a controller in a fluid delivery system controls magnitudes of pressure in a first volume and a second volume. The first volume is of a known magnitude. The second volume is of an unknown magnitude and varies. The controller estimates a temperature of gas in the first volume and a temperature of gas in the second volume based on measurements of pressure in the first volume and measurements of pressure in the second volume. The controller then calculates a magnitude of the second volume based on measured pressures of the gases and estimated temperatures of gases in the first volume and the second volume.

A combination of a chamber wall and the flexible membrane defines a pump chamber in a diaphragm pump. The pump chamber includes one or more internal surfaces that are modified to include a pattern of a pattern of channel surface regions. The channel surface regions provide unobstructed pathways to a respective opening disposed on an internal surface of the chamber wall. For example, as discussed herein, presence of the channel surface regions ensures that the facing of the flexible membrane does not needlessly stick (as a result of residual suction) to an inside surface of the chamber wall during a portion of the pump stroke in which negative pressure is applied to a backing of the flexible membrane. In other words, the channel surface regions distribute relief pressure along the inside surface of the pump chamber wall.

Pump chamber including internal surface modifications

A system for controlled delivery of medicinal fluid includes a fluid pathway assembly defining a fluid pathway and including means for calculating a first calculated fluid flow rate using gas laws. The fluid pathway assembly has an inline flow sensor element received within the fluid pathway movable in response to fluid flowing in the fluid pathway. A flow control device is removably attached to the fluid pathway assembly and has a sensor for sensing a position of the inline flow sensor element in the fluid pathway, the position of the inline flow sensor element being representative of a second calculated fluid flow rate. The fluid pathway assembly includes a variable flow resistor adjustable to regulate a rate of fluid flow in the fluid pathway assembly. A drive mechanism attached to the flow control device is operably coupled to the variable flow resistor when the flow control device is attached to the fluid pathway assembly. The variable flow resistor is adjustable by the drive mechanism to achieve a target flow rate when the first calculated flow rate and/or the second calculated flow rate differs from the target flow rate.

Fluid control system and disposable assembly

A fluid delivery system includes a control interface and multiple unique loading guides. The control interface of the fluid delivery system receives a fluid pump assembly. The multiple loading guides are retractable from the fluid delivery system to retain and control movement of a facing of the fluid pump assembly to contact the control interface on the facing of the fluid delivery system. In one configuration, the control interface is disposed in a cavity of the fluid delivery system; the multiple loading guides are disposed at locations in proximity to the cavity. The multiple loading guides slidably retract in unison to support substantially orthogonal insertion of the fluid pump assembly into the cavity of the fluid delivery system.

A fluid flow resistance assembly includes a fluid pathway. A width of the fluid pathway orthogonal to a flow of fluid through the fluid pathway varies along its length. Positioning of one or more ports at different locations over the fluid pathway at different locations controls a flow rate of fluid.

Fluid flow regulator assembly

In accordance with another embodiment, a controller in a fluid delivery system initiates drawing fluid into a chamber of a diaphragm pump. During a delivery phase of pumping the fluid in the chamber to a target recipient, the controller applies pressure to the chamber. At multiple different times during the delivery phase, the controller temporarily discontinues application of the pressure to the chamber to calculate how much of the fluid in the chamber has been pumped to the target recipient.

A portable infusion apparatus and method are provided for controlling the delivery of medicinal fluid to a patient. A fluid delivery system receives control input to control a setting of a variable fluid flow resistor. The variable fluid flow resistor resists passage of fluid through a fluid pathway between a fluid source and a recipient. The fluid delivery system; produces a control signal indicative of the setting of the variable fluid flow resistor; derives a fluid flow rate value from the control signal; and applies pressure to the fluid source to deliver the fluid from the fluid source to the recipient through the variable fluid flow resistor at a rate as specified by the derived fluid flow rate value.

Portable infusion management apparatus and method

A floating gearbox includes an outer housing with first and second side walls opposite and spaced apart from each other and an inner gear assembly received within the outer housing. The inner gear assembly comprises an inner housing, a first gear member rotatably received within the inner housing, and a second gear member having an output shaft rotatably supported on the inner housing. A slider plate received within the outer housing has first and second pairs of axially aligned elongate openings, wherein the first and second pairs of elongate openings align with a first axis and a second axis, respectively. Pins on the first sidewall are received in the first pair of elongate openings to allow relative sliding movement between the outer housing and the slider plate along the first axis. The inner housing includes pins received in the second pair of elongate openings, allowing relative sliding movement between the inner housing and the slider plate along the second axis.
