Techniques disclosed herein facilitate the use of the primary work queue within an information management application as a centralized access point for creating and viewing multiple types of new draft items such as a note, to-do, or message item. An information management application can receive a new item request through its user interface and initiate a new draft item in response to the new item request. A view of new draft item can then be surfaced in a primary work queue of the information management application. The item type of the new draft item may be different than other item types in the primary work queue.

Technologies are generally described for providing a system for visualizing items and conversations in a communication application. Conversations are presented as a list of items in the communication application. A quantity of presented items is limited based on a size of a client device employed for viewing the items. Visualizations are applied to the presented items to attempt to maximize a number of items that are presented while providing information about the items to enable a user to preview content and take actions on the items. The visualizations include different templates applied to each item based on a type of item and content associated with the item, and the templates may be are dynamically updated based on user interactions with the items. The templates for items are determined by applying a set of rules and factors to each item to determine a most appropriate visualization for each item.

The method includes activating a pointer tool in a touch screen display in response to contact with an area of the touch screen and persisting the displaying of the pointer tool in the touch screen display after the contact with the touch screen is removed. Once editing data is received, the pointer tool is removed from the touch screen display.

Various technologies and techniques improve the process for creating and displaying context menus and tooltips. Procedures for listening for events, enabling, retrieving and displaying context menus and tooltips reside in a central service model. The developer accesses the central service model and specifies content for a context menu or tooltip. Rich media content such as audio, video, and graphic output can be included in context menus and tooltips. Shapes and effects of displayed content can also be customized.

Techniques and tools described herein provide effective ways to program a property of a target object to vary depending on a source. For example, for a key frame animation for a property of a target UI element, an alternate time source is set to a property of a source UI element. When the target UI element is rendered at runtime, the animation changes the target value depending on the value of the property of the source UI element. Features of UI elements and animations can be specified in markup language. The alternate time source can be specified through a call to a programming interface. Animations for multiple target UI elements can have the same source, in which case different parameters for the respective animations can be used to adjust source values in different ways.

The described embodiments allow for the selection of content in a touch screen display. The method includes detecting a single tap on a word of text in a text editing field in a touch screen, and responsive to the single tap selecting the word of text in whole. In another embodiment additional content can be selected. Contact with selected content displayed in a touch screen can be detected. The contact with the touch screen can be detected moving in a direction along the selected content. Additional content is selected by selecting a word of text adjacent to the selected content being contacted.

Aspects of the subject matter described herein relate to creating and using deltas to modify existing computer code. In aspects, computer code may be translated into a higher level language to make it easier for a software developer to modify the computer code. The translated computer code may be presented by an editing tool that presents a user interface that allows changes to be made to the translated computer code. A delta engine may then determine a delta that indicates the changes to perform on the existing computer code to create computer code that would result from compiling the translated computer code as changed via the editing tool. Later, this delta may be used to change the existing computer code after it has been loaded to add or change debugging hooks or other features of the computer code.

Determining a total dimension of items in computer-based user interface control (e.g., non-uniform items displayed in grid-view), may be accomplished by determining an estimated dimension value (e.g., for all items in a series) and combining (e.g., multiplying) that value with a total number of items (e.g., items in the series). If a viewport offset value and viewport item value is known, and/or a previously realized dimension and previously realized item value is known, the estimated dimension value may be determined by combining one or more of these values with values for realized items. Otherwise, the estimated dimension value can be determined by dividing the realized items dimensions value by the number of realized items. A total dimension value may be used by a user interface element, for example, to calculate an appropriate size and location of a scroll bar display.

Disclosed is a default property sheet system that coordinates default values for elements used in a user interface. Interface designers add default values for the properties of the elements that they define. The default 'value' is broadly understood. Not limited to fixed values, the default property sheet can provide a rule for calculating a default value. The rule can take into account, for example, aspects of the present environment. The order of searching for a rule that provides a value to a property of an interface element is defined. Other collections of value-setting rules, called 'non-default property sheets,' can be created that take precedence over the default property sheet. The default property sheet can be a &#x201c;theme of last resort.&#x201d; If a property of an interface element is not given a value elsewhere, then the property is given the value specified in the default property sheet.
