Structures for field emission displays and methods of making and using such structures are provided. In one implementation, a cathode plate of a field emission display includes a cathode substrate of the field emission display and a plurality of emitter lines formed on the cathode substrate. In another implementation, an anode plate of a field emission display includes a transparent piece of the field emission display and a plurality of phosphor lines formed on the transparent piece. The plurality of phosphor lines are to be aligned with and receive electrons from a plurality of emitter lines of a cathode substrate of the field emission display.

Field emission display utilizing a cathode frame-type gate and anode with alignment method

Flat panel displays, such as field emission displays (FEDs), plasma displays, liquid crystal displays (LCDs), and electroluminescent displays (ELs), are provided incorporating driver circuitry on the same substrate as the active display region of the display device and further reducing through-vacuum and substrate-to-substrate interconnects. In one implementation, an image display device comprises a substrate; an active display region formed on the substrate and including addressable rows and columns defining pixels; and one or more driver ICs on the substrate, respective outputs of each driver IC coupled to respective ones of the addressable rows and columns, the driver ICs adapted to drive the active display region to display an image. The device also comprises a wireless receiver coupled to the driver ICs, the wireless receiver adapted to wirelessly receive a wireless signal including an input video signal for display and couple the input video signal to the driver ICs.

Image display device incorporating driver circuits on active substrate and other methods to reduce interconnects

Field emission displays (FEDs) having improved structure are provided. In one implementation, a field emission display comprises a faceplate, a backplate, a volume formed therebetween and maintained as a vacuum, a cathode and an anode. A thickness of the faceplate and the backplate are sufficient to prevent deformation of the faceplate and the backplate across their dimensions due to the vacuum such that spacers are not needed to maintain a uniform separation between the anode and the cathode. In an alternative implementation, the volume includes a first portion between the cathode and the anode and a second portion between the cathode and the backplate, the second portion continuous with the first portion. The second portion provides an improved volume to surface area ratio, which improves vacuum quality and which allows for improved gettering, which again allows for improved vacuum quality and longer display lifetime.

Spacer-less field emission display

A cathode plate of a field emission display comprising a cathode substrate of the field emission display and a plurality of linear isolation barriers each having a length and a thickness and attached to a top surface of the cathode substrate. The plurality of linear isolation barriers are spaced at intervals such that electron emitter lines can be formed between respective ones of the plurality of linear isolation barriers. In one embodiment, the linear isolation barriers comprise ribs attached to the top surface of the cathode substrate. In some embodiments, the linear isolation barriers are adapted to contact gate wires of a gate frame of the field emission display positioned above the cathode substrate to dampen driving frequency vibrations in the gate wires.

A cathode plate of field emission display comprising a cathode substrate of the field emission display having a thickness and one or more in-laid linear isolation barriers formed within the thickness of a top surface of the cathode substrate. The one or more in-laid linear isolation barriers are adapted to contain electron emitter lines, wherein the one or more in-laid linear isolation barriers provide field isolation between respective ones of the electron emitter lines. In one embodiment, the in-laid isolation barriers comprise trenches. In some embodiments, portions of the top surface in between in-laid isolation barriers are adapted to contact gate wires of a gate frame positioned over the cathode substrate in order to dampen driving frequency vibrations in the gate wires.

Field emission display utilizing a cathode frame-type gate

Devices for electric field control in a field emission display are provided. In one implementation, a device includes a cathode substrate, a plurality of emitter lines formed on the cathode substrate, and a plurality of gate wires crossing over the plurality of emitter lines. Each gate wire has a cross section shaped to produce an electric field between adjacent gate wires that is substantially uniform and substantially flat across a portion of an emitter line in between the adjacent gate wires, the electric field causing an electron emission from the portion of the emitter line. Generally, the electric field is produced by applying a voltage potential difference between at least one gate wire and the emitter line, the electric field sufficient to cause the electron emission.

Field emission display using gate wires

An electron emitting structure that produces a substantially uniform electric field resulting in a substantially straight electron emission. In a preferred form, the electron emitting structure is used as a cathode plate of a field emission display (FED). In one embodiment, an electron emitting structure comprises a substrate, a first electrode formed on the substrate, a second electrode crossing over an active region of the first electrode, and an insulating material separating and electrically insulating the first and second electrodes. A plurality of openings are formed in at least a portion of the second electrode crossing over the active region. And, an electron emitting material is deposited on at least a portion of the active region of the first electrode, portions of the electron emitting material not underneath respective ones of the plurality of openings of the second electrode.

Field emission cathode structure using perforated gate

An electron emitting structure, for example, for use as a cathode plate of a field emission display (FED). The structure comprises a substrate, base electrodes formed on the substrate and gate electrodes crossing over the base electrodes. An insulating material is formed on the substrate and the base electrodes that separates the gate electrodes from the base electrodes, the gate electrodes formed on the insulating material. And an electron emitting material is deposited on active regions of the base electrodes, each active region defined as a portion of each base electrode between a respective pair of gate electrodes. In one implementation, the FED produces a substantially uniform electric field in the active region in order to produce a substantially straight electron emission little dispersion.

Field emission display using line cathode structure

A field emission display (FED) consists of a cathode plate including a plurality of emitter lines formed on a cathode substrate, a gate frame positioned over the cathode plate, the gate frame including a plurality of gate wires, and an anode plate including a plurality of phosphor lines positioned over the gate frame. The plurality of phosphor lines are aligned with the plurality of emitter lines. In some variations, the FED includes a plurality of linear isolation barriers separating one or more of the plurality of emitter lines. In some variations, the linear isolation barriers are in the form of ribs or trenches.

An electron emitting structure having deflectable electrodes, such as found in grating light valves (GLVs) is provided. In one implementation, the structure includes a substrate having base electrodes and gate electrodes coupled thereto and insulated from each other, and an emitting material deposited on active regions of the base electrodes. Upon applying a voltage potential difference between a base electrode and a gate electrode, a portion of one of the base electrode and the gate electrode deflects through electrostatic force positioning the portion of the one of the base electrode and the gate electrode relative to another one of the base electrode and the gate electrode such that an electric field is produced that is sufficient to cause an emission from an emitting material deposited on the base electrode. In preferred form, lower drive voltages are required to provide the electric field without requiring sub-micron spacing between electrodes.

Field emission display with deflecting MEMS electrodes

A method of making a wire for a gate frame of a field emission display including the step of forming a gate wire of a gate frame of a field emission display, wherein the gate wire has a cross section shaped to produce an electric field between adjacent gate wires that is substantially uniform and substantially flat across a cathode sub-pixel region of an emitter line of the field emission display. In one embodiment, the electric field causes an electron emission that is substantially straight from the cathode sub-pixel portion of the emitter line.

Method for making wires with a specific cross section for a field emission display

A method of alignment of components of a field emission display comprising the steps of: attaching a first alignment barrier to a cathode substrate including electron emitters; positioning a gate frame against the first alignment barrier such that the gate frame is aligned with the cathode substrate; and sealing the gate frame in position against the first alignment barrier to the cathode substrate. The gate frame is a discrete component manufactured separately from the cathode substrate. A second alignment barrier is attached to the gate frame and an anode plate is positioned and sealed against the second alignment barrier such that the anode plate is aligned with the gate frame.

Method for aligning field emission display components

The method of driving a field emission display comprising the step of applying a potential between one or more gate wires positioned over a plurality of emitter lines of a cathode substrate and one of the plurality of emitter lines, wherein producing an electric field that releases electrons from a portion of the one of the plurality of emitter lines. For example, a positive voltage is applied to two adjacent gate wires with respect to the one of the plurality of emitter lines, wherein releasing the electrons from a portion of the one of the plurality of emitter lines between the two adjacent gate wires.

Method for driving a field emission display

A device for controlling an electric field at a cathode sub-pixel region of a field emission display comprising a cathode substrate having a plurality of emitter lines formed on the cathode substrate and a gate frame having a plurality of gate wires positioned over respective the plurality of emitter lines. Each of the plurality of gate wires has a cross section shaped to produce an electric field between adjacent ones of the plurality of gate wires that is substantially uniform and substantially flat across the cathode sub-pixel region of respective ones of the plurality of emitter lines. The cathode sub-pixel region is defined as a portion of each of the plurality of emitter lines in between the adjacent ones of the plurality of gate wires.
