A system for evaluating radiation treatment planning generates a fictitious treatment dose matrix with a quality of dose placement beyond that achievable with physically realizable radiation therapy machines. Such a fictitious treatment dose matrix provides an objective measure that is readily tailored to different clinical situations, and although unattainable, thereby provides a benchmark allowing evaluation of radiation plan goals and the radiation plans between different multiple clinical situations and individuals.

Benchmark system for radiation therapy planning

A method for performing composite dose quality assurance with a three-dimensional (3D) radiation detector array includes delivering a radiation fraction to the 3D array according to a radiation treatment (RT) plan, measuring absolute dose per detector of the 3D array, per unit of time, determining a radiation source emission angle per unit of time, synchronizing the RT plan with the measured absolute doses and determined radiation source emission angles to determine an absolute time for a control point of each beam of the synchronized RT plan, converting the beams of the synchronized RT plan into a series of sub-beams, generating a 3D relative dose grid for each of the sub-beams, applying a calibration factor grid to each of the 3D relative dose grids to determine a 3D absolute dose grid for each of the sub-beams, summing the 3D absolute dose grids to generate a 3D absolute dose deposited in the 3D array, and determining a 3D dose correction grid for application to the RT plan based on the 3D absolute dose.

Systems and methods for composite dose quality assurance with three dimensional arrays

A radiation dosimetry quality assurance system is disclosed that includes a three-dimensional (3D) phantom extending along a longitudinal axis to form an exterior surface and an interior volume and a passage formed to extend into the interior volume of the 3D phantom to removeably receive a detector array therein. The system also includes an angular-compensation system coupled to the exterior surface of the 3D phantom and having a physical contour extending from the exterior surface of the 3D phantom and configured to control an angular dependence of the detector array during measurement of the actual radiation dose delivered by the radiation delivery system. The system further includes a detector-angle adjustment system configured to allow selection of a relative position of the detector array with respect to a radiation source of the radiation delivery system during measurement of the actual radiation dose delivered during the planned medical process.

System and method for improved radiation dosimetry

Electronic portal imaging device (EPID) images are converted to an absolute dose at a simulated absolute dose plane in a measurement phantom for supporting intensity modulated radio therapy (IMRT) dose quality assurance (QA) by geometrically projecting the EPID image as may be needed, generating an output factor correction map specific to a radiation treatment beam, multiplying an EPID image by the output factor correction map for generating an output corrected EPID image, and convolving the output corrected EPID image with a redistribution kernel for generating a relative dose at a preselected dose plane. A wide field calibration map is then applied to the relative dose for generating an absolute dose at the preselected dose plane location.

Dosimetry system and method for radiation therapy

A method for making a beam modifier to be used in radiation therapy includes defining a region of interest in a patient that is to receive radiation, with the region of interest being defined using an anatomy coordinate system format. Radiation treatment parameters are defined for the defined region of interest, and correspond to an initial type beam modifier to be coupled to an output of a radiation device. Design data on a beam modifier to be placed on the skin of the patient is generated, with the design data being based on the defined region of interest and the defined radiation treatment parameters for the defined region of interest. The design data is in the same anatomy coordinate system format as the defined region of interest that is to receive the radiation. The design data is treated as a new region of interest, and the radiation dosage to be applied to the new region of interest is re-calculated while taking into account the beam modifier to be placed on the skin of the patient.

Radiation therapy using beam modifiers placed against a patient's skin

Segmentations used to describe structures to be treated by radiotherapy are evaluated by converting the segmentations into volume models and examining volume elements that are extra or missing in the volume model of the second segmentation with respect to the volume model of the first segmentation. This characterization of volume elements may be displayed graphically to show differences in segmentations for training or evaluation purposes and may be quantified by a metric method tallying volume elements as optionally weighted by distance from volume elements shared by the segmentation.

System for assessing radiation treatment plan segmentations

A method of determining a patient dose during or prior to therapy from an external radiation beam includes determining a dose distribution from a patient plan as delivered in a QA phantom at each appropriate beam angle and comparing the dose distribution determined from measurements or calculations to a corresponding treatment planning system (TPS) dose modeled distribution in the QA phantom and providing a correction distribution when applied to the TPS dose modeled distribution results in the dose distribution determined. The correction distribution may optionally be interpolated to non-measured points for each beam angle and geometrically projected toward the source of radiation through a volume that equals a dose volume of the TPS for a patient beam for each beam angle. The correction distribution is applied to the TPS patient dose volume for each beam angle for providing a corrected dose distribution in the patient.
