A micro-optic security device () includes a planar array of microlenses (), which are configured to focus light along a plurality of focal paths () associated with a viewing angle. The micro-optic security device further includes an icon layer stack () disposed along the plurality of focal paths. The icon layer stack includes a first icon layer () with volumes of cured material of a first color () and volumes of substantially transparent material at locations outside of focal paths of the first range of viewing angles. The icon layer stack also includes a second icon layer () with volumes of substantially transparent cured material at locations along focal paths of the first range of viewing angles, and volumes of cured material of a second color () at locations along focal paths of a second range of viewing angles.

Optically variable security devices, including security threads, patches, labels, strips, are disclosed herein. Certain security devices according to the present disclosure utilize a lens-less construction whereby multiple icon layers are coupled to produce a synthetic image or synthetic color that has an optically variable effect. Each icon layer includes an array of high-resolution icon elements that are aligned relative to each other and spaced apart from each other to produce the desired optically variable effect. Such security devices are particularly, though not exclusively, useful for authenticating security documents.

Lens-less micro-optic film

A security device includes an array of image icon elements and an array of image icon focusing elements, wherein the array of image icon elements and the array of image icon focusing elements are disposed relative to each other such that the security device projects a synthetic image along a viewing angle and wherein the security device is configured to physically degrade when exposed to temperatures above an anti-harvesting temperature, the anti-harvesting temperature being lower than a harvesting temperature of a coupling between the security device and a substrate.

Anti-harvestable security feature

An optical security device suitable for securing or authenticating high security or high value articles of manufacture when affixed thereto, is provided. The inventive security device produces optically variable effects when viewed from varying points of view and is made up of a microstructured layer having image icon elements that have at least one pigmented material. The microstructured layer is arranged relative to an arrangement of focusing elements such that at least portions of the image icon elements are observable through at least portions of the arrangement of focusing elements, thereby providing at least one synthetic image that demonstrates a color-transition effect as points of view from which the optical security device is viewed are changed. In one particular embodiment, the optical security device comprises (i) an arrangement of image icon elements having a first contrasting material pattern and a second contrasting material pattern; (ii) a fixed arrangement of focusing elements disposed relative to the arrangement of image icon elements such that the image icon elements project a synthetic image when viewed through the focusing elements, and having a first fixed org-pattern (as defined herein) that is mismatched from the at least one of the patterns of the first and second contrasting materials; where the synthetic image is a projection of both the first and second contrasting material when viewed from at least one angle.

Optical device that provides flicker-like optical effects

A security device for projecting a collection of synthetic images as well as a computer-implemented method for producing such a security device are provided. The synthetic images may represent different viewpoints of a target object or image that change from one viewpoint image to another viewpoint image as the location of the observer changes relative to the device. The nature of each synthetic image can, however, be completely arbitrary, much like the images that are provided by a display device such as a television or computer monitor. In an exemplary embodiment, a special symmetry is used to generate the synthetic images, which allows the device to be manufactured without regard for registration.
