An imaging directional backlight apparatus includes a waveguide and light source array for providing large area directed illumination from localized light sources. The waveguide may include a stepped structure in which steps may include extraction features optically hidden to guided light, propagating in a forward direction. Returning light propagating in a backward direction may be refracted, diffracted, or reflected by the features to provide discrete illumination beams exiting from the top surface of the waveguide. Viewing windows are formed through imaging individual light sources and defines the relative positions of system elements and ray paths. Alignment of the waveguide to mechanical and optical components may be provided by surface relief features of the waveguide arranged in regions adjacent the input surface and intermediate the light emitting regions of the light sources. Efficient, uniform operation may be achieved with low cross talk for application to autostereoscopic and privacy modes of operation.

Surface features for imaging directional backlights

A backlight includes a directional waveguide and a light source array, for providing large area directed illumination from localized light sources. Interfaces are provided between the directional waveguide and optical components adjacent the directional waveguide such that the coefficient of friction at the waveguide interfaces is greater than the coefficient of friction at least one outer interface on each side of the waveguide in the stack. Damage from compressive forces on the optical stack may be reduced, achieving improved optical performance and lifetime. Privacy display, low stray light display and autostereoscopic display may be provided with high uniformity, long lifetime and reduced cost mechanical components.

Backlights having stacked waveguide and optical components with different coefficients of friction

A method and system is disclosed for increasing the holographic storage capacity of a holographic recording medium using an irradiance-tailoring (e.g., optical) element by changing the irradiance profile of the modulated object beam (e.g., by imparting motion to an irradiance-tailoring element and/or the holographic recording medium and/or by reconfiguring (e.g., periodically) the phase profile of a stationary irradiance-tailoring (e.g., optical) element) to minimize the effects of fixed-pattern noise buildup from occurring in the holographic recording medium.

Method and system for increasing holographic data storage capacity using irradiance-tailoring element

A novel photoimageable system for a two-chemistry system containing liquid photoreactive asymmetric acrylate compound containing sulfur, aromatic moieties, and optionally bromine, and an aluminum salt compound is disclosed. The photoimageable system has high dynamic range (M/#) and sensitivity and unexpectedly high temperature and high humidity resistance. The photoimageable system retains its dynamic range when exposed to 60&#xb0; C. for 4 weeks while a composition without the aluminum salt compound lost 75% of its dynamic range under similar exposure conditions. In one embodiment, 2-10 weight % of a thio-butylacrylate dissolved in a two-component urethane matrix containing 0.002 to 1 weight % of the aluminum salt compound showed a dynamic range of greater than 5 for a 200 microns thick sample and retained more than 80% of the dynamic range after 4 weeks exposure at 60&#xb0; C.

Long-term high temperature and humidity stable holographic optical data storage media compositions with exceptional high dynamic range

A novel liquid photoreactive asymmetric acrylate compound containing sulfur, aromatic moieties, and optionally bromine, and having high dynamic range sensitivity is disclosed. The acrylate compound is a monomer for a photoimageable system. In one embodiment, when about 2&#x2013;8% by weight of the acrylate compound is dissolved in a two-component urethane matrix system and incorporated in an optical article formed by reacting the two-component urethane matrix system, the optical article shows a sensitivity of about 4 or more and a shrinkage during the formation of the optical article of about 0.05% versus a sensitivity of 2.26 and a shrinkage of 0.13% when tribromophenyl acrylate, a commercial monomer, was used.
