Wireless routers having an ADSL or cable connection to content data available via the Internet, a wired connection for connecting local clients in a LAN and a wireless controller for connecting to other wireless routers and clients in a wireless local area networks (WLANs). The WLANs often intersect and therefore it is possible to communicate between wireless routers in order to exchange content data via the wireless LAN in addition to the ADSL or cable connection. Further, each wireless routers has a cache data store to cache content data requested by the user, or any other information sent to the wireless router from another wireless router. A central server can schedule transfer of content data between wireless routers by considering information packets stored on the server

Content delivery

A system for transmitting data via a core portion of a computer network to a mobile device is described. The network includes a plurality of access points wherein each access point includes a memory where data for onward transmission to the mobile device may be cached and is operable to communicate with the mobile device over a short-range wireless connection, when the mobile device is in range thereof, and with the core portion of the network over a backhaul connection on a substantially continuous basis. The exemplary system includes: a location collection server for receiving location data from the mobile device; an access point prediction engine for generating predictions of one or more of the access points which the mobile device is considered likely to come in range of in the future based on recent location data received at the location collection server; and a content delivery server for transmitting the data or a portion thereof to the one or more predicted access points via the backhaul connection for caching at the access points and for onward transmission to the mobile device in the event that the mobile device comes into range of the access point, or one or more of the access points where data is transmitted to more than one predicted access point.

Method of transmitting data to a mobile device

A light-weight relay selection mechanism selects the most likely 'best' relay station for data transmission from a given source station S to an access point AP using the Initial Receive Signal Strength (IRSS) to infer the future data transmission rate. In the initialization stage, the access point AP constructs a table mapping the IRSSs of receivers to eight levels of transmission rate. In the relay selection stage, relay candidates R measure the IRSSs for the source station S and access point AP and report their IRSS levels to the AP. A contention-based mechanism is dedicated to enabling the candidate with higher IRSS levels to report earlier. With this mechanism, the access point AP is able to select the station with the highest estimated data transmission rate.

Method of relayed wireless transmission

Authenticated propagation of adverts to multiple mobile recipient devices, each having both wireless and mobile telephony capability, employs message generation platforms each having a content creation engine, a metadata inserter and a signature generator, for the wireless broadcast of the generated messages. A client application on each recipient device controls viewing of the message, with authentication being provided through mobile telephony communication with a trusted authority which is in turn in secure communication with the message generation platform to hold signature information. According to an incentive policy, a device may wirelessly re-broadcast any message.
