The present invention relates to an apparatus for conducting assays on samples and/or processing of samples. The apparatus comprises a rotatably arranged cylindrical sample holder for holding a sample at a lateral surface of the cylindrical sample holder. The cylindrical sample holder is configured to be at least partly covered by a liquid layer. The apparatus further comprises a liquid dispensing means configured to add liquid to the liquid layer, a reagent dispensing means configured to add a reagent to the liquid layer and a liquid contacting means configured to distribute liquid within said liquid layer. The liquid contacting means comprises a plate-like element flexibly assembled in relation to the cylindrical sample holder. The present invention also relates to a method for conducting assays on samples and/or processing of samples.

A method and apparatus are provided, in which an observation volume is defined by a volume where light from illumination means and a field of view of detection means overlap. The central axes of said light from the illumination means and said field of view of the detection means are non-parallel, and the sample is transported through the observation volume during imaging, preferably by rotation of a sample container holding the sample.

High throughput biochemical screening

An apparatus for imaging a includes an light source for illuminating the sample simultaneously in a line focus or an array of foci; and a sensor for detecting photons emitted or scattered from the sample simultaneously in an array of fields of view. An array of sub-observation volumes in the sample, from which photons are emitted or scattered during imaging, is defined by the volumes in space where the line focus or array of foci from the light source overlap with the corresponding array of field of views of the sensor. A cylindrical sample holder holds the sample at a surface and is rotatably arranged such that at least a portion of the sample can be transported through at least one of the sub-observation volumes by rotating the sample holder. The apparatus can be used in a high-throughput method of imaging.

Method and device for high throughput imaging

There is disclosed an optical device for dispersion compensation of channels within a predetermined wavelength band, comprising: a waveguiding structure; and a grating structure formed in said waveguiding structure; characterized in that said grating structure has a Bragg frequency profile that is divided into contiguous periods, wherein the Bragg frequencies within each period vary between a lower Bragg frequency and an upper Bragg frequency, said lower and upper Bragg frequencies for each period both corresponding to wavelengths outside of said predetermined wavelength band.

Channelized dispersion compensation module

A spectrally selective optical switch is disclosed. The switch comprises a first and a second optical waveguide each having a light guiding structure arranged to guide light along a predetermined path, the optical waveguides being arranged adjacent and parallel to each other; an external resonator defined by a first and a second mirror, said first and said second mirror being provided on opposite sides and outside of said first and second light guiding structures, and said external resonator being resonant to a specific wavelength; and a deflector provided in each of said first and second optical waveguide, the deflectors being arranged to deflect light propagating in one of the light guiding structures to the other light guiding structure by operation of said external resonator. A matrix switch is also disclosed.

Wavelength selective switch

A spectrally selective optical coupler is disclosed, comprising a first and a second waveguide; an external resonator defined by at least a first and a second mirror; and a respective deflecting portion in each of said waveguides for coupling light between the waveguide and the external resonator. The waveguides are arranged between the mirrors adjacent to each other in a plane that is generally parallel to said mirrors; and the external resonator is designed such that a resonant mode within the external resonator overlaps the deflecting portion in the first and the second waveguide. The inventive coupler solves some limiting geometrical problems encountered in the prior art. A lateral extension of a mode in the external resonator overlapping both waveguides is obtained using a curved resonator mirror or refractive elements or portions within the resonator.

Optical add/drop multiplexers

The invention is a spectrally selective optical coupler with a new geometry and a new principle of action. An optical coupler according to the invention comprises an optical fiber and an external lightguide. In the fiber there is provided a deflector that is operative to deflect light of a predetermined wavelength into a propagating mode of said lightguide. The outcoupled light is transferred to a region remote from the outcoupling portion of the fiber. The invention can be used to couple light from a first to a second optical fiber.

Optical coupler

The invention relates to methods and arrangements for channel balancing of a wavelength division multiplexed optical signal. Channel balancing according to the invention is performed by using a resonator that provides a selection region in which a selected channel has a substantially increased poser density relative to channels out of resonance. The selected channel is attenuated a desired amount, i.e. a desired amount of power is removed therefrom, by adjusting the properties of the selection region. In a preferred embodiment, attenuation is achieved by adjusting the selection region such that destructive interference is obtained for the selected channel in a fiber carrying tile multiplexed optical signal.

Channel balancing of a wavelength division multiplexed optical signal

A novel method and apparatus for fabrication of blazed and slanted fiber Bragg gratings is disclosed. The method comprises the step of simultaneously exposing the fiber with two mutually coherent light beams so as to create an interference pattern along a longitudinal axis of the fiber, wherein each one of said beams is brought into a line focus, which coincides with the core of the fiber. Further, the plane comprising the beams is rotated to provide a second angle relative to the fiber direction, said rotation giving rise to a blazing angle of the photo-induced grating elements.

System and method for fabricating Bragg gratings

The invention relates to the coupling of light to and from an optical waveguide, such as an optical fiber. Optical coupling

A novel method based on sequential writing for fabricating of advanced fiber Bragg gratings is disclosed. As opposed to already presented sequential methods, this scheme uses a continuous wave UV laser source and allows for a very precise control and repetitively of the formation of the gratings. Furthermore, one can use high average irradiances without destroying the fiber, resulting in a dramatical shortening of fabricating times for complex gratings.

System and method for fabricating Bragg gratings with overlapping exposures

A method of establishing transmission of light through a chirped Bragg-reflector, a method of analyzing the power spectrum of a light signal using a chirped Bragg-reflector, and an arrangement for analyzing the power spectrum of a light signal. The Bragg-reflector reflects, in an unperturbed state, essentially all incident light within a predefined wavelength range. The methods include the steps of directing the light to be analyzed into an input end of a light guiding structure, such as an optical fiber, which light guiding structure is provided with a Bragg-reflector, and sending an acoustic pulse along the light guiding structure, thereby effectively lowering the reflectance of the Bragg-reflector for a certain wavelength at a certain time. By monitoring the light thus transmitted through the Bragg-reflector, a power spectrum analysis of the incident light is obtained.

Method and arrangement in connection with optical bragg-reflectors

The invention is a spectrally selective optical coupler with a new geometry and a new principle of action. An optical coupler according to the invention includes an optical waveguide and an external resonator. In the waveguide, there is provided a deflector that is operative to deflect light of a predetermined wavelength into the external resonator. Coupling is enhanced by the deflected wavelength being resonant in the external resonator.
