A vehicle occupant restraint system includes an inflatable airbag arranged in a vehicle seat. When the airbag is triggered it at least partially unfolds in the direction of travel on a side of the vehicle seat facing the vehicle interior. The vehicle seat includes a backrest frame extending in a substantially vertical direction in the vehicle seat and substantially aligned in the direction of travel. The airbag is connected to a front end of the backrest frame pointing in the direction of travel.

Passenger restraint system

The disclosed airbag is for an occupant protection device, which protects a vehicle occupant in the event of an accident. In order for the airbag to provide a vehicle occupant with a great protective effect, an embodiment may comprise at least one supporting chamber, which gives the airbag mechanical stability in the inflated state, and at least one energy absorption chamber, which is designed to be more gas permeable than the supporting chamber. With such a configurations the energy absorption chamber absorbs more energy than the supporting chamber during the first phase of an accident.

Airbag for an occupant protection device

A side airbag device for a vehicle includes an airbag which is deployed in the event of an accident and, in the deployed state, covers a side wall section of the vehicle. In order for the airbag to reliably deploy, provision is made according to embodiments of the invention for the side airbag device to have a deployment control mechanism which deflect the airbag during its deployment around an obstacle situated in a region of a side wall section.

Side airbag device

A gas generator for an occupant protection system of a vehicle includes a compressed gas store, first and second bursting devices, and a gas generating triggering device. The compressed gas store has a discharge opening and is configured to store a compressed gas. The first bursting device can close the discharge opening. The triggering device can open the discharge open. The bursting devices can be supported against one another when the compressed gas store is closed, and an increased pressure for bursting a bursting device being able to be built up between the bursting devices by gas generated by the triggering device.

Gas generator for an occupant protection system of a vehicle

An occupant protection device for motor vehicles, having an unfoldable protection element which, when unfolded, forms a curtain for the protection of vehicle occupants, in particular in the head/chest region. A tensioning strap is provided which, when the protection element is unfolded, is tensioned between a first vehicle point and a second vehicle point and in the process forms an obstacle against which the unfolded protection element is supported by means of its outwardly directed rear side.

Occupant protection device for motor vehicles

The invention relates to a non return valve for an airbag of a vehicle passenger retention system, which is provided with a connection hose between two chambers of the airbag, wherein in the connector hose a fabric inlay is accommodated. The fabric inlay subdivides the connection hose into a flow passage between the first and the second chamber and a pressure chamber which is in connection with the second chamber. As soon as the internal pressure in the first chamber is greater than that in the second chamber the fabric inlay opens the flow passage. If on the contrary the internal pressure in the second chamber is greater than that in the first chamber the fabric inlay closes off the flow passage by means of the internal pressure which acts in the pressure chamber.

Non return valve for an airbag

An inflatable airbag for a motor vehicle is provided. The airbag includes a main chamber configured to be connected to a gas generator. The airbag is arranged so that when the airbag is inflated at least a portion of the main chamber covers a side wall of the vehicle. The airbag may further include an additional airbag region configured to form an approximately spherically shaped chamber when inflated. The spherically shaped chamber may be configured to be inflated via the main chamber. The spherical chamber provides for an advantageous shortening of the airbag when the airbag is inflated when compared to the dimensions of the airbag in its spread out or uninflated state.

Inflatable airbag

The invention relates to an airbag module for motor vehicles comprising a housing for a folded together inflatable air bag and a holder element which can be locked to the housing, with the holder element extending in the locked state with at least one holder section through the side wall of the housing in the region of a lug of the side wall which can be bent aside relative to the side wall.

Gas bag module

The invention relates to a method of manufacturing an airbag which consists of a plurality of airbag parts and has an airbag envelope. In the method at least one airbag part is provided at least regionally with a polyurethane coating through the heating of which the airbag part can be welded to a further airbag part.

Method of manufacturing an airbag

The invention relates to an airbag apparatus for motor vehicles, in particular to a side airbag apparatus, comprising a gas generator (11), a gas filler tube (12) which is tightly connected thereto, which preferably is or can be laid in along the roof spar of the vehicle, which is provided with gas outflow openings (13) at predetermined distances and which is connected to an inflatable gas bag (14) which extends at least along a greater portion of its length and which preferably consists of individual cells (15), of which each is preferably associated with a gas outflow opening (13). The invention consists in that the gas outflow openings (13) are formed by incisions (17) in the wall of the gas filler tube (12) and by indentations (18) of the tube wall material at least at one side of the incisions (17).

Airbag apparatus for motor vehicles

A method and apparatus for compactly folding an airbag of an airbag apparatus adapted for use in motor vehicles. One side of the airbag has a central opening for connection to a gas generator, with a reinforcement preferably around the central opening. The airbag is laid out flat, is held at its center and the zones lying radially outside of the center are turned in around an axis extending at least substantially perpendicular to the flatly laid out gas bag through the central firm holding zone in at least one direction of rotation until a compact airbag package is formed. One embodiment of the invention includes radially disposed axial shifting members, which leave a reception space radially inward and which displace the flexible material of the flatly laid out airbag alternatively, as seen in the circumferential direction in the one or other axial direction before the airbag is wound up. This is done in such a way that the airbag adopts a corrugated or zigzag like course when seen in the circumferential direction, with the wave-shape and wavelength being selected such that with a synchronous rotation of the axial shifting members about the axis, the zones of the wave-like or zigzag folded airbag lying radially outside of the central firm holding zone are at least substantially taken along in the circumferential direction by the axial shifting members. The winding takes place until the compact airbag package is formed and located radially within the axial shifting members with the formation of radial folds pointing alternatively in opposite axial directions in the receiving space.

Method and apparatus for compactly folding an airbag for an airbag

The invention relates to a method for accommodating an airbag of an airbag apparatus into a container. The folding method employed allows the airbag to folded into a small container, yet ensures that the airbag will inflate in a substantially uniform and jerk-free manner. The method is still fairly cost effective. A preferred embodiment encompasses inserting a first plunger into an opening in a lower half of the airbag such that it pushes the upper part away from the lower part. The upper part is then clamped between the first plunger and a second plunger. Next, the airbag is folded upward such that a plurality of radial folds is created, which are then folded inward. A hollow die is then placed over the folded airbag. The upper end of the airbag and a central portion of the airbag are twisted in different directions while a third plunger is placed over the end face of the folded airbag. The third plunger is then used to compress the airbag. The third plunger is then removed while a container is placed over the compacted airbag and the die is removed.

Method for accommodating an airbag of an airbag apparatus in a container

An improved airbag arrangement in motor vehicles is described having at least one gas generator, a generator carrier, a folded together gas bag having at least one opening which receives the gas generator and a pot-like cover which accommodates the folded together gas bag, with the base of the pot-like cover being capable of being broken open by means of the gas bag expanded by the gas generator and with the marginal region of the cover remote from the base being connected to the generator carrier.
