A radome uses traditional continuous heating wires mixed with detuned dipoles between heating wires and can be placed at any chosen distance from an array antenna or FSS. The continuous heating wires add a reactive component to the incident field phase, which is effectively cancelled out by the detuned dipoles which provide a capacitive component. The orthogonal components of the incident field are transmitted with very small losses over a wide number of scan angles. These heating and detuned dipoles can be printed on low loss dielectric materials. In addition, the printed elements of this radome can be scaled to operate over a chosen frequency band.

Radome with detuned elements and continuous wires

A wideband phased array antenna includes an array of dipole antenna elements on a flexible substrate. Each dipole antenna element has a medial feed portion and a pair of legs extending outwardly therefrom, and adjacent legs of adjacent dipole antenna elements have respective spaced apart end portions to provide increased capacitive coupling between the adjacent dipole antenna elements. Preferably, each leg has an elongated body portion, and an enlarged width end portion connected to an end of the elongated body portion. Thus, a phased array antenna with a wide frequency bandwith and a wide scan angle is obtained by utilizing tightly packed dipole antenna elements with large mutual capacitive coupling. Conventional approaches have sought to reduce mutual coupling between dipoles, but the present invention makes use of, and increases, mutual coupling between the closely spaced dipole antenna elements to prevent grating lobes and achieve the wide bandwidth.

Wideband phased array antenna and associated methods

A broadband multi-element antenna is presented. The antenna comprises a monopole centrally disposed within a cavity of the body, and a plurality of antenna elements disposed at ninety degree increments about the periphery of the cavity. A plurality of isolation traps are connected between selected pairs of the antenna elements. The isolation traps are half-wavelength transmission lines which permit excitation of the respective plurality of elements by input signals which are of equal amplitude and 180.degree. out-of-phase but are short circuits between the respective pairs for in phase signals parasitically induced from the monopole. Additionally, switching traps are connected to respective ones of the antenna elements. The switching traps comprise quarter-wave transmission lines which are switchable to ground and selectively provide a short circuit of signals at the respective ones of the elements for changing the radiation pattern of the antenna.

Broadband multi-element antenna

An improved space-filter formed as a composite multi-layered structure. Utilizing a periodic slot array structure nested between first and last strata of a dielectric material, the filter exhibits a constant bandwidth characteristic over a broad range of angles of incident radiation. Where two slot arrays are utilized in parallel relationship, an intermediate dielectric layer is provided which has an effective dielectric function selected to achieve critical array component coupling.

Space filter

An antenna system in which a conical shaped metallic radome has a surface composed of a periodic array of radiating slot elements. Each slot element has three arms connected to each other and extending radially outward with the angular distance between adjacent arms equal to 120.degree.. The slot elements are aligned in order to have each of the arms in an element parallel to an arm in an adjacent element forming a uniform periodic array.
