A method to repair a peripheral portion of a body including: removing a damaged portion from a peripheral region of the body; mounting a replacement ring to the body after removal of the damaged portion; forming an interior groove between the inner surface of the replacement ring and the peripheral surface of the body, wherein the groove is between ridges; welding the replacement ring to the body, wherein weld material is applied only within end grooves, and leaving a void in said center section after the welding of the replacement ring to the body.

A method of repairing a damaged dovetail on a peripheral portion of a turbine wheel includes the steps of removing buckets from the dovetail; removing a damaged dovetail from the peripheral portion of the turbine wheel, leaving a rotor wheel body having a peripheral rim; disposing a replacement ring about the peripheral rim, the replacement ring and the rim defining therebetween a pair of end grooves and a center section; and welding the replacement ring to the peripheral rim, with weld material applied only within the end grooves, leaving a void in the center section.

Method and apparatus for self indexing portable automated tenon peening

A remotely operated drilling tool is configured to produce holes in a core shroud support plate inside of a nuclear reactor vessel. The tool includes a support base that is securely mounted directly above the location where the hole will be formed. In a first operation, a drilling tool is secured to the support base and drills a hole through about 90% of the shroud support plate. The drilling tool includes chip capturing structure to prevent chip created by the machining process from contaminating the water in the reactor vessel. After about 90% of the hole is drilled with the drilling tool, an EDM tool is secured to the support base to machine the remainder of the hole using an EDM process. The EDM tool includes structure for machining the remainder of the hole, removing the slug from the hole, and performing a spotface on the underside of the shroud support plate. The underwater drilling tool is capable of producing high quality holes faster and more efficiently than the current EDM process, while maintaining control of all foreign material, minimizing the deleterious effects on the material being drilled, and reducing the risk associated with poor tool reliability and breakage.

Underwater remote drilling tool and methods

An underwater machining apparatus that is capable of drilling completely through a surface and collecting all machining debris is described. The underwater machining apparatus, in one embodiment, includes a drill body, a drill motor coupled to the drill body, a drill bit coupled to the drill motor, and a drill bit sleeve positioned coaxially around the drill bit. The underwater machining apparatus also includes a vacuum assembly coupled to and in fluid communication to the drill bit sleeve. The drill bit sleeve is configured so as to permit water to be drawn through the sleeve by the vacuum assembly, thereby removing the machining debris. The vacuum assembly includes a collection container configured to collect solid particles of machining debris while permitting water to flow through the container.

Apparatus and methods for drilling with capture of all process debris

Methods and apparatus for mapping pipe and valve bores in a reactor pressure vessel (RPV) of a nuclear reactor are described. In one embodiment of the apparatus, a main bar and an adjustable chuck facilitate positioning of a digital indicator inside a valve bore. In the one embodiment, the main bar is rotatably coupled to the chuck, and the chuck includes four movable jaws. A data acquisition element, which includes a digital indicator, is movably coupled to the main bar and configured to move substantially coaxially to the main bar. To map the circumference of the bore, the main bar and the chuck are inserted into the valve bore, and the chuck is used to center the main bar coaxially within the valve bore. The data acquisition element is positioned at a first location along the main bar, and the main bar is rotated so that the digital indicator maps the circumference of the bore. The data acquisition element is then moved to different locations along the main bar to map the circumference of the bore at different locations.

Methods and apparatus for mapping pipe and valve bores in a nuclear

An apparatus for emitting a laminar flow of inert gas at a location inside a reduced-width, high-aspect-ratio (ratio of depth to width) weld groove. The portion of the gas distribution apparatus extending into the groove has a thickness less than the width of the weld groove and distributes inert gas which displaces the ambient atmosphere overlying the molten pool area at the bottom of the weld groove. The gas distribution apparatus may take the form of a tube, a planar array of mutually parallel tubes joined at the sides, a monolithic block having an elongated cross section with a parallel array of channels drilled or machined therein, or a support frame covered by a gas-permeable skin. To achieve a laminar flow, a gas diffusing structure is incorporated in each gas distribution tube. The gas diffusing structures include the following: a compression spring attached to the end of the gas distribution tube and having an opening which is covered by a porous or non-porous cover; a fine-mesh screen which is wrapped around the distal end of the gas distribution tube and having an opening which is closed by a porous closure; a metal wire wool or braided rope which is stuffed inside the tube; or a distal section of the tube is made from porous material and has an opening covered by a porous end cover.

An apparatus for upgrading/repairing existing piping systems of a nuclear reactor without removal/replacement of the old piping. The process involves the steps of machining a counterbore of exposed corrosion-susceptible material and then depositing a corrosion-resistant weld material, thereby isolating the weld joint from corrosion susceptibility. A tool is inserted into the inside diameter of the piping system through an inspection port, valve body or segment removal. Then a tool mounting fixture equipped with axial and rotational capabilities is positioned in relation to the weld joint and locked in place. The tool mounting fixture remains locked in place throughout the entire repair process. A work surface mapping module is programmed to first gather relative reference points throughout the entire repair region. Upon data acquisition completion, the system creates a map of the existing inside diameter configuration. Then in successive stages, a machining head module and a welding head module are respectively manually installed and remotely operated by computer control. The machining and welding processes follow the existing configuration such that upon completion, the final repair blends with the piping inside diameter contour.

Remotely operated, automatic contour mapping, machining and welding

A weld head assembly which, in one embodiment, includes a mounting ring subassembly and a faceplate subassembly is described. The mounting ring subassembly includes a mounting ring configured to be mounted to one of the pipes to be welded. At least one motor is mounted to the mounting ring and the motor includes an output shaft having a rotatable spur gear mounted thereto. A plurality of bevel rollers are mounted, at spaced locations, to the mounting ring and each of the rollers is mounted along a same radial path. The faceplate subassembly is secured to the mounting ring subassembly and includes a faceplate ring, a bevel ring and a spur gear mounted to the faceplate ring. Wire spool holders, wire feeders, a welding torch, and cameras are secured to the rotatable faceplate ring. The bevel ring is located to rotatably interface with the bevel rollers of the mounting ring subassembly and the spur gear is located to mesh with the rotatable spur gear of the mounting ring motor so that the faceplate subassembly rotates with the motor spur gear.

Weld head assembly

A bottom open sled system for exchanging control rod drives in a nuclear reactor is described. The system, in one form, includes a tower forming a control rod drive receiving area, at least one acme screw extends substantially the length of the tower and is mounted within the receiving area. An elevator is coupled to the acme screw and is movable relative to the acme screw. The elevator is configured to engage a portion of the control rod drive and to substantially support the control rod drive. The system further includes a trunnion cart engaged to the tower so that the tower is rotatable relative thereto.

An effluent container has two halves which fit together to form a cylinder, open at the top, for catching residual contaminated water falling from the control rod drive (CRD) housing under the influence of gravity when the seal between the CRD housing and the CRD is broken. The container has an aperture which fits around the extension rod that supports the CRD when the mounting bolts are removed. The container halves are held together by elastic cords stretched between hooks on the side-walls. The effluent container has L-shaped slots which hook onto the bracing bolts of the sway brace system to support the container in position for catching falling water. Spilled water drains out of the container to a sump.

Effluent container

A low-headroom tower is pivotably mounted to a trunnion cart that runs on rails in a slot in a work platform located in the sub-pile room of a reactor containment. An elevator in the tower raises an extension piece into contact with the bottom of a control rod drive. A detorquing guide is rotationally positioned to coincide with bolts holding the control rod drive in place. The elevator places an upward force on the control rod drive during detorquing of the bolts. This provides reaction torque to aid in bolt loosening and prevents leakage of contaminated effluent past the seal. A detorquing tool is fitted into the detorquing guide and is spring loaded to engage a selected bolt securing the control rod drive. An indexing device provides alignment for the detorquing tool with each succeeding bolt. The elevator is lowered until the bottom end of the control rod drive enters the tower. The load is transferred from the extension piece directly to the elevator. Lowering continues until the top end of the control rod drive emerges from the reactor vessel. Normally retracted rear wheels are attached to the tower. A winch rotates the tower to the horizontal position, and the rear wheels are extended to engage with the rails to permit rolling horizontal movement of the tower.
