The strength of wood composites, including hybrid composites comprising wood members bonded to reinforced polyester members, is improved by modifying the polyester components with a polyisocyanate. Wood composites adhesively bonded with polyester resins modified according to this invention are particularly desirable for use in applications where exterior exposure is contemplated.

This invention relates to free-radical curable, styrene-containing resin compositions having reduced styrene emissions. More particularly, the invention relates to free-radical curable, styrene-containing resin compositions having reduced styrene emissions comprising: (a) a polymerizable alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylate resin, which is dissolved in styrene; (b) a paraffin wax; and (c) a fluorocarbon surfactant.

The invention relates to sheet molding compounds having improved viscosity control comprising polyester-polyurethane hybrid resins formed by the reaction of an A side composition and a B side composition. The A side composition comprises a polyfunctional isocyanate compound and a free radical polymerization catalyst. The B side composition comprises a mixture of (i) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer solution having no active hydrogen groups which has dissolved therein about 40-90 weight percent of a substantially water-free, unsaturated polyester polyol having at least one dicarboxylic alkene moiety and having an acid number less than five; and (ii) a methacrylate ester of a C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 alkylene diol.

A process for cleaning a metal, plastic or wood surface on which there is a residue resulting from contact with a cured resin which comprises applying to said surface a solution of a copolymer of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and maleic acid, drying said solution of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and maleic acid to form a film, and separating said film from the metal surface.

Method of forming or shaping a resin-bound mass (e.g., core-making or mold-making pattern or core box, particle board, etc.) in or from shaping means having shaping surfaces and releasing the shaped resin-bond mass from the shaping surfaces, which comprises coating the shaping surfaces of the shaping means with an improved, substantially stable, alcoholic dispersion or solution of a release coating suitable for repeated use, heating the coated shaping surfaces of the shaping means for sufficient time to convert the coating thereon to a stable, cured, abrasive-resistant release coating, placing a curable resin-bound mass of solids to be shaped against the release-coated shaping surfaces, curing the resin-bound mass, and separating the cured resin-bound mass from contact with the release coated shaping surfaces. The coating composition comprises a substantially stable alcoholic dispersion or solution of a substantially pure silanol of the formula RSi(OH).sub.3 or partial condensate of one or more silanols of the formula RSi(OH).sub.3, wherein R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl radicals of 1 to 3 inclusive carbon atoms, the vinyl radical, the 3,3,3-trifluoropropyl radical, the gamma-glycidoxypropyl radical and the gamma-methacryloxypropyl radical.

Fabrication of composite articles

A binder system is disclosed which incorporates an internal release agent and comprises a mixture of polyisocyanate resin, furfural and an ester of phosphoric acid. In the process of the invention the ester of phosphoric acid is placed into solution with furfural and subsequently blended with the polyisocyanate. Increased stability of the binder system is observed as well as providing for increased mold releasing capabilities.

Particle board process using polymeric isocyanate/release agent

Composite building structures, such as foam core panels or the like. The panels comprise one or more foam core sections, preferably cores which include fire retardant additives. The exterior sheathing for the foam cores is a multiple laminate containing an inorganic filler material, such as glass fibers or ground carbonaceous or siliceous material; the filler is bound in place by a fire retardant, furan-based resin. The method includes forming a plurality of layers by depositing the resin and the filler alternately in a mold, thereafter placing boards or like core structures thereover and covering the exposed surfaces by multi-ply laminates of the fire retardant furan-based resin containing the glass fiber, carbonaceous or siliceous fillers. The method is also applicable to cover existing foam core installations used in building structures.
