Cellular urethane polymers are provided by effecting the reaction of an organic polyol reactant comprising a polyether polyol and an organic polyisocyanate reactant in the presence of a blowing agent and a catalyst system comprising an N,N-dimethylaminoalkoxypropionitrile. The said N,N-dimethylaminoalkoxypropionitriles are versatile, low odor catalysts and are useful in forming cellular urethane polymers ranging from all water-blown flexible polyether foam to all fluorocarbon-blown rigid foam products. Especially preferred for use in the practice of the invention are 3-(2-dimethylaminoethoxy)propionitrile and 3-[2-(2-dimethylaminoethoxy)ethoxy]propionitrile either as such or in combination with other catalysts including other tertiary-amine components and/or organic compounds of tin. The formation of high-resilience polyurethane foam is provided by the use, as the foam-stabilizing component, of a particular class of sulfolanyloxyalkyl-polyalkylsiloxanes which consist essentially of: (1) monofunctional siloxy units (M.degree.) the respective silicon atoms of which have two alkyls bonded thereto, the third silicon-bonded organic group being alkyl or sulfolanyloxyalkyl; (2) an average of from about 0.5 to about 10 moles of difunctional dialkylsiloxy units for every two moles of M.degree.; and (3) from 0 up to an average of about 10 moles, for every two moles of M.degree., of difunctional monoalkylsiloxy units in which the second organic group bonded to silicon is sulfolanyloxyalkyl, provided an average of at least about 0.5 and no more than about 10 moles of sulfolanyloxyalkyl groups are present in the sulfolanyloxyalkyl-polyalkylsiloxanes for every two moles of M.degree.. In addition to such sulfolanyloxyalkyl-polyalkylsiloxanes, the high resilience polyurethane foam formulations employed in the method of the invention contain an organic polyol reactant comprising a polyether polyol reactant having an average primary hydroxyl content of at least about 35 mole percent based on the total moles of hydroxyl groups contained in said polyether polyol. The formation of polyurethane foam including flame-retarded foam is provided employing, as the surfactant component of the foam formulation, a particular class of sulfolanyloxyalkyl-substituted polysiloxane-polyoxyalkylene polymers. The polymers comprise chemically combined monofunctional siloxy units (M.sub.o) and difunctional siloxy units (D.sub.o) and, for every two moles of M.sub.o, an average of from about 2 to about 100 silicon-bonded sulfolanyloxyalkyl groups (Q) and an average of from about 2 to about 30 silicon-bonded polyoxyalkylene blocks (E). The M.sub.o units have at least two alkyls bonded to the respective silicon atoms thereof and the D.sub.o units have at least one alkyl bonded to the respective silicon atoms thereof, the remaining group bonded to silicon of said M.sub.o and D.sub.o units being alkyl, Q or E. When the polyol reactant of the foam formulation is a polyether polyol, the polymers contain from 10 to 200 dialkylsiloxy units and from 2 to 100 Q groups, and the polyoxyalkylene content of E is constituted of from 20 to 75 weight percent oxyethylene. When the polyol reactant is a polyester polyol, the polymers contain zero or up to 20 dialkylsiloxy units and from 2 to 20 Q groups, and the polyoxyalkylene content of E is constituted of at least 75 weight percent oxyethylene.

This invention relates to ion-pair-containing siloxane compounds that are extremely effective as surface tension depressants. The compounds of the present invention contain both anionic and cationic substituents and can be formed by metathesis reactions between metallic salts of anionic silicone or organic surface-active compounds and halide salts of quaternary ammonium silicone or organic surface-active compounds. The compounds of the invention are relatively pH insensitive when compared to siloxanes bearing anionic and cationic substituents that are formed by proton transfer. Thus, the organosilicon compounds of the invention will remain stable despite changes in pH of the mixture in which they are present.

The formation of high-resilience polyurethane foam is provided by the use, as the foam-stabilizing component, of a particular class of morpholino-bearing polyalkylsiloxanes which consist essentially of: (1) monofunctional siloxy units (M.degree.) the respective silicon atoms of which have two alkyls bonded thereto, the third silicon-bonded organic group being alkyl or Q where Q is morpholinoalkyl- or morpholinoalkoxyalkyl, (2) an average of from about 0.5 to about 8 moles of difunctional dialkylsiloxy units for every two moles of M.degree., and (3) from zero up to an average of about 8 moles, for every two moles of M.degree., of difunctional monoalkylsiloxy units in which the second organic group bonded to silicon is Q, provided an average of at least about 0.5 and no more than about 8 moles of said silicon-bonded Q groups are present in the siloxanes for every two moles of M.degree.. In addition to such morpholinoalkyl- and morpholinoalkoxyalkyl-polyalkyl-siloxanes, the high-resilience polyurethane foam formulations employed in the method of the invention, contain an organic polyol reactant comprising a polyether polyol reactant having an average primary hydroxyl content of at least about 35 mole percent based on the total moles of hydroxyl groups contained in said polyether polyol. The polyol reactant may additionally conprise a polymer/polyether polyol.

Organosilicone compositions are provided which comprise polysiloxane-polyoxyalkylene copolymers containing monofunctional siloxy units and difunctional siloxy units, an average of between about 2 and about 20 silicon-bonded cyano-bearing ether groups for every two moles of monofunctional units, said cyano-bearing ether groups having the formula, --(O).sub.q R'OR'CN, wherein q is 0 or 1, R' is bivalent alkylene of 3 to 8 carbon atoms and R' is bivalent alkylene of 2 to 4 carbon atoms, and an average of between about 2 and about 30 silicon-bonded, organic-capped polyoxyalkylene blocks for every two moles of monofunctional units, at least 75 weight percent of the polyoxyalkylene content of said copolymers being constituted of oxyethylene units, said monofunctional units having at least two alkyls bonded to the respective silicon atoms thereof and the difunctional units having at least one alkyl bonded to the respective silicon atoms thereof, the remaining organic group bonded to silicon of the respective monofunctional and difunctional siloxy units being alkyl, said cyano-bearing ether group or said polyoxyalkylene block. The polymers of the invention are effective stabilizers of flexible polyester polyol-based polyurethane foam and offer particular advantage in the formation of flame-retarded foam.

Organosilicone compositions are provided which comprise polysiloxane-polyoxyalkylene copolymers containing monofunctional siloxy units (M.sub.o) and, for every two moles of M.sub.o, an average of between about 10 and about 200 difunctional dialkylsiloxy units, an average of between about 2 and about 100 silicon-bonded cyano-bearing ether groups (Q) having the formula, --(O).sub.q R'OR'CN, wherein q is zero or one, R' is bivalent alkylene of 3 to 8 carbon atoms and R' is bivalent alkylene of 2 to 4 carbon atoms, and an average of between about 2 and about 30 silicon-bonded, organic-capped polyoxyalkylene blocks (E), the polyoxyalkylene content of said copolymers being constituted of between about 20 and about 65 weight percent of oxyethylene units, said M.sub.o units having at least two alkyls bonded to the respective silicon atoms thereof, the remaining organic group of M.sub.o being alkyl, Q or E, said copolymers also containing difunctional monoalkylsiloxy units the remaining organic group bonded to the respective silicon atoms thereof being Q or E. The polymers of the invention are effective stabilizers of flexible polyether polyol-based polyurethane foam and offer particular advantage in the formation of flame-retarded foam.

A particular class of sulfolanyloxyalkyl-substituted organosilicone polymers are provided which comprise chemically combined monofunctional siloxy units (M.sub.o) and difunctional siloxy units (D.sub.o) and, for every two moles of M.sub.o, an average of from about two to about 100 silicon-bonded sulfolanyloxyalkyl groups (Q) and an average of from about 2 to about 30 silicon-bonded E.degree. groups where E.degree. is hydrogen or a polyoxyalkylene block (E). When E.degree. is hydrogen, the polymers are sulfolanyloxyalkyl-substituted polyalkylsiloxane hydrides and, when E.degree. is E, the polymers are sulfolanyloxyalkyl-substituted polyalkylsiloxane-polyoxyalkylene copolymers. The monofunctional siloxy units encompassed by M.sub.o have at least two alkyls bonded to the respective silicon atoms thereof and the difunctional siloxy units encompassed by D.sub.o have at least one alkyl bonded to the respective silicon atoms thereof, the remaining group bonded to silicon of said M.sub.o and D.sub.o units being alkyl, Q or E.degree.. The sulfolanyloxyalkyl-modified polyalkylsiloxane hydrides are especially useful as hydrosilation and condensation agents such as in forming the correspondingly modified polyalkylsiloxane-polyoxyalkylene copolymers of the invention. The copolymers in turn find particular application in the manufacture of cellular urethane products including urethane foam containing a flame-retardant.

Sulfolanyl-bearing organosilicone polymers

A particular class of sulfolanyloxyalkyl-polyalkylsiloxanes are provided which consists essentially of: (1) monofunctional siloxy units (M.degree.) the respective silicon atoms of which have two alkyls bonded thereto, the third silicon-bonded organic group being alkyl or sulfolanyloxyalky; (2) an average of from about 0.5 to about 10 moles of difunctional dialkylsiloxy units for every two moles of M.degree.; from zero up to an average of about 10 moles, for every two moles of M.degree., of difunctional monoalkylsiloxy units in which the second organic group bonded to silicon is sulfolanyloxyalkyl, provided an average of at least about 0.5 and no more than about 10 moles of sulfolanyloxyalkyl groups are present in the sulfolanyloxyalkyl-polyalkylsiloxanes for every two moles of M.degree.. The sulfolanyloxyalkyl-polyalkylsiloxanes are generally useful as surfactant providing compositions and find particular application as foam-stabilizing components of high resilience polyurethane foam formulations in which the organic polyol reactant comprises a polyether polyol reactant having an average primary hydroxyl content of at least about 35 mole percent based on the total moles of hydroxyl groups contained in said polyether polyol. The siloxanes of the invention are also useful as surfactant components of high resilience foam formulations in which the polyol reactant additionally comprises a polymer/polyether polyol.

Sulfolanyloxy alkyl-polyalkyl-siloxanes

Cyano-modified polysiloxane-polyoxyalkylene block copolymers that contain a trifunctional RSiO3/2 siloxy unit, as well as, a process for producing flexible polyether urethane foam wherein said copolymers are employed as the foam stabilizing component.
